Removing oem fuel filter?

I know this is kindof a dumb question, I just bought a oem fuel filter from napa. $46 what a rip off. Next time I will use fleet filters. but How do I get oem plastic top off without buggering it up. I searched the forum but didn't find an answer.

Thanks

Somebody on this forum found a place where you can order a tool to remove the top of the filter housing but I can't find that thread. You can use pliars to help with the removal if your fingers aren't strong enough to grab the top. LOL. I used a clean rag to help turn the top. When you put it back on, just don't overtighten it.

I use the oil filter strap wrench. It takes a while to use it because you are turning it about 1/32 of a turn each time, but it works. Mark your cover with a paint stick/marker to help when you replace the cover to know when to stop tightening. You don't want to over tighten and break the cover.

I used a big pair of channel locks. Just put the jaws in the grooves and use the leverage. You don't need to squeeze the pliers.

I'd take that napa filter back and replace it with a Baldwin or Purolator that has the cap integrated into it and ditch the oem lid. The filters that have the lid integrated are by far easier to remove as they only require a 1/2" ratchet head, and they are pretty much a no-brainer for installation.

For roughly $26 or so bucks you can get one at Advance Auto parts.

I will do that next time. I got it off, it was on real tight, I used a 3/8 extension and a hammer to gently knock the outside grooves until it loosened up enough. and man was it black. I used the large channel locks to tighten it.

Thanks for the feedback. The all in one definately sounds like the way to go. How often should I change it 12k 15k ????

Every 15k miles. I wouldn't change from the oem style filter though. You can buy the replacement filters for $16 or so apiece. It shore is alot cheaper that way.

They may be a tad more expensive, but I know for sure I won't be spending any more time pulled over on the side of the road at 3 in the morning because of a poor ring seal from a crappy cheap filter.

If it was me I would keep the oem cap. My experience with after market is they tend to leak. You can buy a tool to remove the oem cap at most part stores in KD Tool Line for a little over $20.

I use two very large screwdrivers arranged in a cross pattern to remove and tighten the factory filter lid. I use the OEM style from www.fleetfilter.com.

I haven't experienced the leaking after-market cap syndrome.... But I too recommend saving the OEM lid if you go this route. They're about $16 if you loose it and need it.

Purolator # F59292.

Just bought one for $26.67 at Advance. The motorcraft OEM style was $26.10.

I'll post a picture of it tommorrow.

BTW, it's a much heavier duty lid and gasket than the OEM that tends to crack when you use vise grips, screw drivers, and the such.

This what I use....a medium set of channel locks and use the jowel tips in the moldings on top of the filter housing....shoot, I thought that's what they made those pliers for!

What I did is find one of those orange plastic oil filters that are made to fit nearly any oil filter. Its the kind that on the backside has your ratchet hole and the other has one size that fits a small oil filter and then if you pull that apart because its two pieces you can flip it over and fit those two together again and fit a larger filter. Anyways I took that small section which is just a little smaller that the fuel filter cap on our trucks and took my dremel to it and notched it to fit the grooves on our fuel filter cap. It works really well because the ratchet fits in there for leverage just fine and its bright orange so I dont loose the dam thing! LOL.
Hope this helps.
