take a pair of pliers, open them up and insert the open hadles into the notches of the filter top. take a cresent wrench to turn the pliers at the point where the handles come together. worked slick for me.
Hi all.....Does anyone know where I could get another filter top? Like a dummy I got the purolator filter with the cap already installed, and didn't know I could get just the element and reuse the oem part. Now I don't know if I can remove the cap from the purolator one or not, so to error on the safe side, I would like to get another OEM filter top and get just the refill elements if anyone has one or knows where I could fine one....thanks for the help and keep up the great work guys and gals......Dave

Try this website for the OEM lid for $11.50 plus shipping.
Hey again.
Is there a reason some caps have the horizontal holes in the threads, while others don't? I picked up a new cap at Napa today, and it is solid around the threads, while my current cap has the horizontal holes about mid-way down the threads. Any reason why?
I presume it won't matter which cap I use?
Thanks again!

Yes, the black plastic cover sits over the fuel filter housing. Just remove the two nuts holding it down and lift it straight off the bolts. I think they're 10mm... can't recall right now.
I haven't tried it on the fuel filter yet, but I have used the "strap" style wrench to change oil filters on my gassers where I couldn't get them to turn. They have an adjustable belt that allows nearly any size needed. You get plenty of leverage. You can pick them up at most hardware stores. I've bought them at Harbor Freight and Big Lots for a couple bucks.
Here is an idea that just dropped out of the toolbox and hit me in the head...Some folks are buying or making a fuel filter wrench...I had an old military issue "ford wrench" of all things. I opened the jaws up really wide and the jaws took only a small bit of grinding on the bench grinder and they fit down into the outer ring slots just perfect! Here is a "ford wrench" on ebay for you to look at and see if you have one laying around in the tool box somewhere...good luck all..Dave
Ebay item # 6281332487 and no, it's not mine, but I have one just like it only slightly modified now......
Searched for and found a fuel filter thread so I figured I would put this query here. Just changed my filter for the umpteenth time. Last time was done by a stealership. The O-ring was laying on and sort of stuck to the bottom of the bowl. So of course, my question is, what in the world does that O-ring accomplish? The truck seemed to run just fine without it, so what does it do?
