Thanks for all the info.. I changed my filter today. Used a large 6 point socket on the filter cap and it came off easily. I also was a bit confused on the bottom o-ring. The filter I removed had the bottom o-ring in a grove on the filter. So I installed the new filter exactly like the old one I took out. I did put a small amount of diesel on the o-rings to help them seat. Worked out well. One suprise, the little yellow lever on the back of the housing to remove the pressure and drain water!... Dah I heard the bubbling but could not find it until I climbed off the ladder. Didn't know it would drain under the truck on the new garage floor, DAH<,, Guess I was a bit tired I had just replaced 3 of the 4 door lock actuator mechanisms. Jim
First do not get rid of the stock cap!!! I just grabed my cap with two hands and turned. It came lose. There is a guy on ebay selling ford filters for $25.00. Search for 7.3 parts.
When I replaced mine the new cap had a Torx fitting in the top that I just happened to have a Torx key for. I kept the OEM cap and had the toolmakers here at work fab me a wrench up. Cost me a bag of tacos (10 bucks) from the taco shack just up the street. It's nice to work in 125,000 square foot machine shop.
