What do I need and how do I change valve stem seals without pulling the heads? I looked it up under the tech articles but the page would not load. Thanks for your help,
Terry
Use a compression tester connected to an air compressor to pump up cylinder, piston @TDC.Use "on car" valve spring compressor to compess valvesprings.remove keeper, spring, old seal. Not hard but time consuming. Brian
You will need:
An air compressor.
A sparkplug hole air attachment.
A Valve spring remover for head's on.
The three markings diagram to allow removal of the springs in THREE postions (rather than multiple turning of the crankshaft to do all 16 of them)
A power bar with socket/extension to fit crankshaft bolt
The correct valve seals.
I have done this several times without using air. Be sure the piston is at tdc. Remove the rocker arm, tap the keeper with a socket and a hammer. Install the spring compressor and push down until you can remove the keepers. pull off spring and replace seal. put spring back on and replace keepers. Go to next clyinder and repeat.
put a thin rope down into the spark plug hole and feed in enough to fill the area, then turn the engine by hand to push the piston up and force the rope against the valves.
You can use the rope trick on multiple cylinders also. I like the rope trick since I have more than once pushed on a valve a little to hard and lost the air seal.
