300 valve seals

I know umbrella seals are used but isnt there another
type of valve seal.
Maybe a positive seal?
If so,what is recomended?

Valve seals: The umbrella seals are normally used when a larger-than-stock diameter spring is used. In the case of a double spring, the positive stop Teflon® seals are used. For triple-spring applications, use the smaller-diameter Viton® seals.

Yes that helps.
Its interesting,when I pulled the head apart,the seals were half umbrella and
half(what I think)positive valve seals.
The positive seals were on the exhaust valves.And seemed to be in better condition
than the umbrellas.
The umbrella seals were hardened up and one of them had a chunk missing.

That makes me wonder if that engine had a Crane cam in it, or a dual profile, where the exhaust will open less than the intakes. Or if the springs were different on int/exh., that would explain the seals.

I thought maybe the cam was aftermarket as well.
Its a Ford part.I could run the #'s I guess and find out for sure though.
The exh. valves were carboned up the most.
The springs had thin spacers under all of them,all the same gauge.

Teflon seals are the way to go, those umbrella seals will eventually end up in pieces floating around in your oil.

Ya thats for sure.The old ones I removed were extremely brittle.
But only one had broke a piece off.
Which teflon seals do you suggest?

I was just at the comp site.
They do make teflon umbrella seals.
Im thinking I should be looking into the positve-stop tefflon seals.

These are the ones.

COMP Cams: 11/32 UMBRELLA SEAL

Looks like they're teflon. Soft and pliable, quite the opposite of the ones I removed.

Those are the ones I got with my cam kit.
Im thinking thr positve-stop tefflon seals might be the way to go.
Also Im assuming comp sends the umbrella seals in the kit based on a stock head.
What do you think?
If the valve guides have been re-done would umbrellas still be used?

Good morning.

Do you have a link to the other valve seals? I didn't see those.
I actually didn't get the kit directly, but saw what was in it and then price hunted around the internet.

As far as I understand it, the seals just keep oil from dripping down the valve stems and into the chamber. If that's all they do, then the ones I got look like they work great on a stock head. I don't know much beyond that in that area.

COMP Cams: Valve Seals: Positive Stop Teflon, .530 Guide, 11/32
Half the seals on my head were these,the rest were umbrellas.

Interesting, those look a bit robust!
It looks like they're for higher performance springs, like double valve springs and such.
I went with stock performance replacements, which is probably why they weren't recommended to me.

What type of springs are you using?
