I just put on a 4 barrel intake (c5ae-9425-c) and the old thermostat from the 2 barrel does not fit. It is too small and just falls into the intake. Is there different thermostats from different years?
I recall reading here that there are two different sizes.
Since the intake has a 1965 date code (C5) go to the parts store and ask for a thermostat for a 1965 ANYTHING that had a 390 or 352 (Galaxy? F-series? etc), and compare to the old thermostat you have. Don't buy it until you are sure the new one is bigger.

yea, that is the plan but I wanted to ask around to see if there really was different sizes.
is it the big housing? or same 2bbl housing? becuase ford had 2 different setups. you must use the big housing on the big thermostat opening and the little housing with the little thermostat. finding the big housing is hard.
The early FE engine used the larger thermostat the later FE used the smaller themostat. You have the early intake manifold. Order the thermostat for the 390 cid.
These large thermostat-hole housings are common on early FE engines, but start to get less common about half-way through the '60s, as more FEs were equipped to use smaller thermostats.The thermostat you need is still quite common, so you should have no trouble finding one.
Ford trucks seem to alway have the large thermostat housing and the later Ford cars seem to have the smaller housing.
Bottom Line is take a tape measure and measure the recess in the intake...take that measurement to the local parts house and get one that has that size flange on it!!
and dont believe anyone telling you that a 160* thermostat will make your motor run cooler..get your 180* and go on with your life!! LOL.. JMO..

that stinks
the new intake did not come with the thermostat housing so I tried to use the newer/smaller 2 barrel one on the older/bigger intake.
So now I need to try and find a housing off of an old fe, great. I love wild goose chases.
You can also make a spacer plate to use the smaller stat and housing on a larger stat intake. Just trace your housing onto a piece of flat steel or aluminum. Mark the bolt holes and center hole by tracing the gasket onto it. Double check the center hole is the right size. Drill bolt holes and cut out center hole. Cleanup ragged edges and your done. Depending on how well you do this can be a permanent fix or temporary until you find another housing. G.

the C5AE translated to C5 = 1965
A = FORD (GENERIC) / GALAXIE
E = ENGINE PART
The 9425 is in the 9000 SERIES NUMBER = FUEL SYSTEM & FUEL / OIL GAUGES
C = THE LAST LETTER SUFFIX IS FOR REVISIONS AND SUB-ASSEMBLIES
The intake is off a 1965 Ford Galaxie, FE Series, These large thermostat-hole housings are common on early FE engines, but start to get less common about half-way through the '60s.
Order a 180 degree thermostat for a 1965 Ford Galaxie with a 352 or 390 FE engine.
Note: My 1967 Ford Galaxie with a 390 FE engine has the large thermostat housing.
I did the small thermostat into the big hole with a plate, works great. I believe you can check with NAPA, they should have the bigger t-stat, and I think they also have the housings...
I will check with the local parts store this evening and try to find the right thermostat and housing. I will let you know if I cannot find one. thanks
