i just converted my truck from a 2 to a 4 barrel using a stock intake manifold i came across at a salvage yard. the thermostat housing has the right bolt center but the thermostat falls right into the intake there is no lip in the 4 barrel intake like the two. all the parts houses are showing the same therm and housing that i have now. the manifold is in suprisingly good shape and doesnt appear to be rusted or even machined out. am i missing something?
You need a Stant 13079. I suspect that they are iving you a Stant 13009. I don't recommend using anything except for Stant thermostats, I've had probelms with every single other brand.
There are two different size thermostat's for the FE engines. Pre 65 (or 66) uses a 2" stat and the newer ones the smaller like you mentioned. I went to NAPA and got the correct 180 and think it was a mopar listing like a 318 or something. NAPA part number 191. Most part houses only have the smaller dia stat listed for the FE. G.
I have the same problem as Crecity, except the thermostat housing looks as though it will only hold the smaller t-stat. So would i need either a different t-stat housing (my new ford racing housing takes the smaller also) or intake? Do the Edel performer intakes take the smaller or the larger thermostats? Thanks
Yes you will need the larger housing also. These can be bought everywhere. Maybe try locally first like NAPA or similar and DSC or ebay if nothing locally. Around mid 65 was the change to the smaller stat for oem FE intakes. I'm pretty sure the new Edelbrock intakes all use the smaller ID stat. I've had some old ones that used the larger though.....G.
i had the same problem too bought a 6 engine and it had the bigger style housing the old ones get a pretty penny at swap meets i have seen them go for 45-60 in good condition
Cresity, I must ask a question. On that larger T-stat housing, what is the size of the hose required? Reason I ask is that the hose on an older vehicle would be larger than on a post 67 vehicle. What year is the vehicle this older manifold went into and did the hose talk nicely to your larger housing?
i dont know what year or model the manifold came off of. found it in the back of a datsun at a salvage yard, just recognized it. the output used the same diamater hose as my 68 ford f250 390, just a 2-1/2 thermostat. let me know if you have any more questions/problems. glad to help
Well I just ordered the older style t-stat housing from NAPA. Now I just hope it is the right one. That will save me from buying a new intake. Thanks for all the help everyone.
Let me know if the inlet hose diameter is the same on the small housing as it is on the large housing. I just fabbed up a shim/spacer to hold the smaller t-stat and used the smaller new style housing on the big hole manifold.
