Thermostat Size?

I have a '74 F250 with 390 engine and a 4bbl carb. I have been having problems getting the thermostat cover to seal properly. When trying to purchase a new one from Napa I get a thermostat and cover that are smaller in diameter than the one I have currently. The existing thermostat has about 1/16" overhang on the intake.

How do I find out which thermostat and cover is correct?

When referring to "cover", do you mean the neck (thermostat housing) that bolts on the intake?

I have an FE thermostat and housing in front of me...

The thermostat is two inches in diameter and fits on the housing which has a slight relief to account for the thermostat's flange. The correct order of assembly is intake-gasket-thermostat-housing - bolts.

The thermostat I have is 2 1/2" in diameter and the intake opening is 2 3/16". The housing does have the relief for the thermostat flange. It seems what I have is larger than stock. Any idea on how I can figure out what engine the intake came from?

The necks are different ,some have place for the thermostat to "screw in" .
I found a thermostat of a newer Chevy that was the right diameter to fit in the neck .

Holy crap.. that's huge.

Tell you what... bust out your receipt and go to Napa's web site and cross-check the part numbers. They could have given you the wrong ones. Next time you go to the parts store, bring your old thermostat and housing with you to compare on the spot.

Intake? Hmmm 4V eh? IIRC there were two versions of OEM 4V intakes.. and S Code and another one I forget. What are the numbers cast on the intake? Here is one on Ebay: Ford 68 70 390 428 FE GT s Code C7AE9425 E Intake Manifold Free Shipping | eBay

The FE has two different thermostat hole sizes.

Just tell the guy behind the counter you need a T-stat for a '65 F100 with a 352....you'll get the larger T-stat.

FE's went with the smaller T-stat/hole in either '67 or '68 (can't remember which)

I got a new thermostat by bringing in the old one, the guy lucked out and found one that was the right size. Makes me wonder if it is the right temp...

Cast number on intake is C5AE9425 C

The temp spec is usually stamped on the flange.

Based on Montana's input (welcome back by the way) it's an early intake thus the larger opening.
