Dome light/Door switch question

97 Ranger XLT SuperCab

The dome light does not come on with the opening of the passenger door. I know in the old days that there was sometimes a delete of the passenger door switch on lower models, but I suspect that for liability reasons alone there's probably a door switch.

Now, my questions:

1. Is it possible that I don't actually have a door switch on the passenger door?
2. If I do have a door switch, is it in the latch mechanism as in other late models?

If #1 and #2 are both Yes, then:

3. I've tried spraying the latch assembly with WD-40, but still have no light. Does that mean that the switch is bad?

Thanks!

Based on the way the system is set up, I'd have to think that it is the switch. Both the driver's side and passenger's side door switch circuits run through the Generic Electronic Module (GEM). They both share a single input wire to the GEM, so it would seem to me that if there were any problems in the wires or the module, then both sides would be giving you trouble, not just the passenger's side. That leaves the switch...

If the wire going to the passenger's side door switch was "open", it would cause the same thing, as well as the switch which you suggested Joe.

Thanks or the follow-up Bob.

You are right, the wiring and even the harness connector to the switch should be checked.

Ultimately the wiring from both switches "merge" into a single wire going to the GEM, as I noted before. But if there is an open in the passenger switch wiring before that point, then that could result in only that one side being adversely affected, and not the other (driver's) side.

Without looking at the switch, I assume it's a simple single pole NO switch, correct? It should have hot to one side and that's it?
