Perhaps the key is mileage? Say it is ok to run the same egt's as I do on my gas motor (usually no more than 1400*F), but I expect to rebuild my gas motor at 100k miles (running 20psi of boost) and the diesel I would hope would go much longer.
Or perhaps it's because of the fundamental ignition process and resulting forces and *when* they act on the piston. Being auto-ignition, is the point at which combustion starts not as controlled as a spark-ignition engine? Subsequently causing possibly more hammering forces on the pistons in a diesel than a gas motor (explaining some of the audible rattle inherent in diesels)?
