Question wiper switch problem

My 77 highboy has intermittant wipers. You know the type. Turn the **** left for intermittant.. Right one click from center is low...another click fast. Push the **** in and it washes. What has happened is that the low setting doesn't work. The high setting will work for a while then occasionally the wipers will stop mid windshield. Then they will start again.

My question. Does this sound like a dead wiper control switch....or ??????

I'd pull the switch and make sure the switch contact points are clean. Oxidation and corrosion can keep you from making good contact. I'd also check for good ground.

Sounds to me like a wiper motor ground or speed governor problem.

Does the Intermittent work ?

yes...the intermittent works beautiful. No issues there. It will work forever...just the steady on is having issues.

Is the intermittent switch easily available as a replacement piece? Who sells them?

Also, can an intermittent switch be replaced by a standard switch directly? Does anything need to be changed?

Thanks

The switch plugs into the same plug as the old (regular) one. I have done this. I got mine off of eBay.

To swap from Non-Intertittent to intermittent wipers ...one has to have the special switch AND the special Governor.

Check the tech articles for the procedure.

Yes, the switch is easily available as a replacement part. Check out our sponsors, most of them sell the switch. I have found this switch in the National Parts Depot catalog on page 199 (part # F-17A553-7) at a cost of $54.95 each. I have seen these on ebay (used) once in a while too.

The two switches (standard and intermittent) are totally different and will not interchange. The standard switch does not physically have the intermittent selection available. It only has off,low and high. -Ed

What I meant by interchanging, was could an intermittent dwitch be replaced by a regular switch without modifying the truck? I realize I would lose the intermittent function.

Yes it should plug right in, I did it on my 70 stang which uses the same switch as the truck.

Eric, I think he means.... can he get intermittent wipers by replacing the NON intermittent switch with an Intermittent one.

The answer of course is NO..

You need the (Governor) speed control
