Explorer Shift Linkage Trouble
I was driving this evening and when I went to put the gear selector into park something popped and now it won't shift back up (I have a '94 Ford Explorer with A4LD Autotrans). If I manually shift the selector at the transmission I can put it in park, and then I can shift to drive, but not back to park once I have gone to drive. It is a one way ticket. I assume there is a return spring somewhere. It is on the kickdown linkage under the hood? Or is it inside the transmission? Thanks for any help.

I had a similar problem (but with no "pop") but just the opposite: I could not shift down to 2 or 1. It turned out to be dried mud in the little boot that goes over the end of the shift cable where it connects to the trans. Cleaned it out and it works fine now.

Answering my own question
I found the problem. The casing on the cable is broken right by where it mounts to the steering shaft. Now the only hard part is getting the part. Only the dealership seems to have it around here, and it isn't cheap. No way I can see to patch it either.
