2001 Escape V6 Shift Linkage? Issue

2001 Ford Escape 3.0L V6 DOHC

Shift lever moves from park through all other gears but does not lock in any position, it is very "loose".

Also, the "box" that lights up around the letters for the gears ONLY lights up around the "P" for Park. As soon as the gear selector lever is moved from park, the box will not appear around another gear letter.

I traced what I believe to be the shift cable through the firewall and into the engine compartment. It goes straight down towards the transmission on the driver side. I see the little "arm" or lever it attaches to and I had my buddy move it through all the gears as I watched, this lever did not ever move.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and if you need more or specific information, please let me know. - Patrick

PS: Gear selector lever is NOT stuck in Park, however the vehicle IS stuck in Park.
PS: Gear indicator on dash only ever indicates gear if selector lever is in the Park position.
PS: I have done research but most threads I find are related to the selector lever not being able to move from Park, which mine can.
