I was looking at some plasmas this weekend and not only are the TVs expensive, but so are the 24K gold cables to run to it and the dvd, vcr, cablebox, etc. You need a 350-750 dollar surge surpressor with multiple filters to protect the integrity of the TV and you need to upgrade to HDTV and pay for that service every month as well as the reciever....OUCH! I almost forgot the tax!
We walked away in shock as we couldn't believe how sensitive they are...
Anyone own one that could describe their experience?
the power filter but I can see (not at $350, $100 UPS from Costco works just fine), but while you are at it throw in a couple sets of 100% silver(ends and wire)RCA cables.
That salesman tried to get you hook, line and sinker...
Their highest profit items are the cables. They style of *some* sales people is what leads me to the opinion that they are a lower form of life, somewhere around lawyers.
GEt your TV from the TV store. Then go to the local electronics store and get your patch cables. Unless you have an elaborate AV system a basic transformer surge protector will suffice. Not to be confuesd with a power strip. A good isolator will run between $50 and $100 bucks.
As far as a plasma monitor only being good for 5 years, I say, do some more research.

I was at BestBuy where they don't work on commision, or so they say. I looked at Costco as well and will look for their power filters (good idea). I'll try the electronic store for cables. The salesman told me they are good for 60,000 hrs, when doing the math that is TV time for 12 hours every day for 12 yrs...boring.
And how about the BS of them being non repairable? And burn in from ticker symbols or cnn or fox news after 1/2 an hour?
i worked at ultimaet for 10 years and that sounded just like there sales tactics. as far as being repairable they can be fixed just like any other TV, however if the display panel goes out or some thing goes wrong with it, the whole panel has to be replaced which would be about the cost of a new one. as far as burn in goes, just like any other TV or computer display if you leave a still picture or graphic on the screen long enough a ghost of that image will be permenantly burnt into the screen
I'm still looking, since I couldn't find zero percent financing I might have to wait till Christmas. I'd really like to pay cash, but I REALLY need a new quad...
I honestly couldn't see the difference in picture quality between the plasmas and a good flat-screen conventional TV. I bought a 36-inch Sony Wega and saved a fortune.
I'm not completely sure since I don't own one, but I hear that plasma screens have a finite lifetime. After so many hours of use the colors begin to fade. Not a big deal if you don't watch TV much, but mine seems to stay on 24x7.
