Plasma or LCD??

I will be looking for a new TV in the next month or so and am undecided which to go with. I am looking for a set in the 37" to 42" size range to fit the cabinet I have. Also, which brand is the best bang for the buck? Thanks.

If you do get plasma, stay away from "EDTV" and whatever you get, make sure it has HDMI inputs. I bought an Acer LCD and it seems to be holding up fairly well. Westinghouse appears to be making some excellent value LCD's with true, full HD resolution in those sizes, but I think they are only monitors, meaning you need to feed it a source (digital box, DVD, etc.) as it is not a cable tuner.

I got a Panasonic 42' plasma about 18 months ago. Considering the price I paid at the time vs. the cost now I overpaid by ALOT. But I had to be the first one with a new tv too...so that's what I get. It's a great TV.
Also Furball is right on....EDTV is not HDTV. But you have to have HDTV programming from your cable or Sattelite provider to get full use of the TV's features.
Costco or the like usually has really good prices on LCD and Plasma TV's with a large selection. And you can't beat their return policy.
just my .02c

I love my new plasma tv. 42inch widescreen Hitachi.

One thing to think of is if you have children that will be able to reach the television. The LCD has a softer more pliable screen that I was told is easier to damage. The Plasma has a hard outer screen and less likely to get damaged by little fingers.

I agree with the EDTV comment, stay away from it. 1080P is the latest technology although their is currently very little product for it.

The color on my Plasma is SO rich even without a HD signal.

That is what I meant in my first post, the Westinghouse are true 1080P.

I'm partial to LCD. The Plasma have a shorter lifespan. The only benefit plasma has is the blacks are deeper and darker.

Plasma's are reported to have a lifespan of 30,000-60,000 hours of viewing. at 6 hours a day that equates to 5000-10,000 days of viewing or 13.7 to 27.4 years of viewing. LCD's are reported to have a lifespan of 40,000-80,000 hours of viewing. At 6 hours a day that equates to 6666-13333 days of viewing or 18.3-36.5 years of viewing.

So strictly speaking I agree with you Ryan BUT realistically I have no intrest in watching the same television set for 36 years. Maybe I'm a spend thrift but I am sure that 10 years from now I will be chomping at the bit to buy whatever the newest technology is at that time.

I read somewhere that LCD's are the way to go if you are into gaming (Playstation, etc.). That said, I'm not into games, so I bought a 42 inch plasma. The color and definition are spectacular.

Go look. You can do all the online research you want, but you'll want to see them in person for the final determination. I just bought a 40" Samsung LCD. Plasma's tend to have "red-push", and I saw that in the store. Also, if HD programming is available to you, you want a TV that gets 1366x768 resolution. Some may claim 720p picture, but only have 1200 pixels in their horizontal resolution. 1080p may be the next wave, but most won't be able to see the difference, and the only things that take advantage of it are the HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs. ($500 and $1000 for the players).

I'll warn you of this: standard-def cable, digital cable and digital satellite won't look that great on an HDTV--the large screens highlight the flaws (some of it looks better, some looks worse), but the HD stuff is amazing.

Recently in an electronics store I switched the channel on a plasma demo, from the HD channel they were using for demo, to a regular cable channel. The regular channel looked awful. I men, worse than on a regular CRT TV. It was un-watchable. But on the rear-projection TV right beside, using the same signal, the regular cable channel looked just fine, whereas the plasma killed it on the HD channel.

Soooo - I fugre I need two new TVs. A big screen rear-projection for regular channels, and a plasma for DVDs and HD channels.

We just installed a new direct TV HD receiver and the new dish and HD eye will be here as soon as the roads clear. Now Jason you are telling me it will be worse? We do not have an HD TV yet but just installing the receiver cleaned up the picture considerably.

We bought a 26 inch LCD HD television and had Direct TV install the new dish along with the receiver. I hate the receiver but the HD channels are great in my opinion. Discovery HD Theater kicks tail!

As for other channels, even the ones I watch such as Science, National Geographic, regular Discovery and the local channels I get out of Memphis look good. In fact, I hate to even watch a crt tube tv anymore!

Edit: Oh yeah, with plasma, the screen is more subject to burn in from the "watermark" logos they put in the corner of the screens. I have read that this has been improved with newer sets but I would stay away from the cheapo plasmas if I were to buy one.

Thanks my friend. I now know What will be alongside the Xmas tree this year. Most likely be the only thing there. And I was hoping for an overhaul kit for my 272 y block. Hope what ever the Y is in the 62 short box runs well. But it is under two feet of snow and still rising at this time. Sounds strange but I'm hoping it will rain.

Let me explain my "hate" for the HD receiver. You have the options of setting up personal program guides. There are two available. After going through and setting one guide up, I discovered one day that the channels had been moved from one classification to another. Some channels I wanted on there didn't even show up. A call to D TV tech resulted in them telling me that they "reclassified" the channels in their lineup. Now I have TNT showing up in four of the channel guides and some that should be in one class in another. They have no explanation as to why. So, I hate the receiver. The regular receiver was so much easier to operate as was the remote. Ahhh....isn't technology wonderful?
