I wouldn't spend $50 on any cable. Go to monoprice.com and pay much, much less. With digital cables, they either work, or they don't. Better quality ones may last a little longer, but usually A/V cables are behind a cabinet, not getting coiled, un-coiled and walked-on on a daily basis. Paying for Monster cables at Best Buy is like sending in a 300% tip with your tax check.
monoprice.com is outstanding for cables. Their prices are great and shipping is fast. I can order a cable on Sun. night at 10:00 and they send me an email receipt with tracking # in about 15 minutes.
Their price on a 6ft. HDMI cable is like $3.50 plus 2 day priority mail for a total of about 7-8 bucks.

When we changed from CONcast to Direct TV the new HD box came with HDMI cable. Since I wasn't able to do a side by side comparison, I can't say with 100% certainty, but the picture sure "seemed" to have better quality. Then again the regular TVs most def had better pics on sat than cable, so pehaps it was a wash.
A standard set of component cables will give you the same quality of picture as a HDMI cable.
Up to 1080i resolution. 1080p can only be acheived with HDMI. Also, you will need a separate cable for audio: 2-chanel RCA up to Digital Coaxial or Optical.
I still don't know whether HDMI is better than seven (discrete) channel analog.
HDMI is DVI with audio thrown in. HDMI and DVI are completely digital. A $5 DVI/HDMI cable will perform just as good as a $60 DVI/HDMI cable. With digital, you either get everything how it originally was, or you get nothing at all. Cable quality really does not matter at all.
