I'm looking at buying a 93-95 Ranger 2wd, probably a stepside, and was wondering which engine I should look for, the 2.3 or the 3.0. If the two get similar mileage, I'd probably go with the 3.0, but if the 2.3 is a fair bit better I'd buy it. Having said that, if anyone can tell me the approximate MPG for each engine in my application, that'd be great. Also, if anyone knows of any common problems with these trucks, that'd be nice as well.
the 2.3 is a 4cyl. and the 3.0 is a 6cyl. the 3.0 should technically have a little more power and burn a little more fuel. i have heard good things about the 2.3 and i've got a 3.0. the v6 is under powered but is a good motor if maintained and have heard of 200,000 mile+ odometer readings. also keep in mind that their are other things to consider also for instance, is it a manual or auto, 4x4 or 4x2, tire size, and condition of all around vehicle.
I have a 1997 supercab stepside with the 4 cyl and a 5 speed. It has 218K on it, and still gets 27-29 highway. I don't tend to keep track in the city, but I think it is usually around 25.
FWIW, I drive about 60-62 most of the time on the highway, because that's all the truck wants to do. I think if I pushed her to 70, that would drop considerably.
defenately stick, it makes up to a 5 mpg difference depending on driving habits. The milege is way better in town with a stick that is where you'll save more money.
I have a '93 2.3L 5sp and i get an average of exactly 25 mpg, and that is with half my driving in the city. stick is definitely the way to go, all my vehicles have been stick and i have gotten up to 10 mpg better than friends i know with the exact same vehicle. with this ranger, i have a friend with the exact model but it's an auto, and he's lucky to get 20.
i wish i had a stick instead of an auto. i guess i was too lazy at the time but now i'm regretting it cause of the mods i've done it would be nice to pick my own gears!
