Hi when I was at a swap meet in carile Pa I took a small pice to one of the venders that selles all kinds of polish. The man told me the name of the metel and I cant remember it but it is not aluminum, he told me to clean the part first by using red devel drain cleaner. He said mix the cliner with water pouer it in to a vat let the part sit in the mix for 15 min pull it out it will be black use a buffer very fine wheel and use the white brick for the polish. He also said to get skuff marks use 1800 fine wet sandpaper to sand them out. Hope this helps Rory
I was looking at your gallery and had a few questions on the pics you got there. Is that blue dropped truck yours? If so, What kind and size of wheels are on it? I have been looking around for some 17's or 18's by 9" or 10" wide and can't find any....

It may not be the exact same type of aluminum as the base metal of the trim, but it is a very hard form of aluminum on the surface of this trim. I think I have seen it listed as aluminum oxide or something.
Anyway, I have polished it by hand and that just doesn't get the job done. I think a motorized polisher is the only way to fly with this. Once you rub, buff or polish through the hard anodized surface aluminum, you will then have to keep wax on it all the time or seal it with clear coat. If you don't at least do the waxing, then all of that hard earned shine will fade away.
I think you may be right about the material. I just got my parts catalog from NPD and it lists the same type of material. You are also right about not being able to polish it by hand. I tried and all it seemed to do was remove the black color it was starting to turn.
It looks cleaner now but it's still pretty dull. I'm thinking I may need to find that Eastwood catalog and get some buffing materials. I may get some of the Zoop Seal that they are always bragging about too.
