The trim on my 78' F-150 is starting to look pretty bad. It is starting to look really dull. My question is, was the trim actually chromed, (it is solid metal and does not have the rubber in the middle) or was it polished stainless steel.
Should I get a kit to polish it, or send it out to have it chromed?
Also, what do you call this trim option? I am assuming that the trim with the rubber in the middle is considered "racetrack" molding or do I have it backwards?
If the trim goes down over the wheel wells along the bottom of the truck and the normal chrome your talking about going along the truck at the top is "racetrack" molding.
I would prolly be easyest to just repolish it. It is hard to polish these aluminum pieces, but it can be done.
My truck has the chrome that runs inside the concave all the way down the side of the truck and it has chrom pieces that go over the wheel well arches. It doesn't have any other chrome pieces along the bottom.
If you look at my gallery, my 77 F-100 has the racetrack trim package.
The trim is aluminum, but the chrome pieces that go over the wheel wells might be steel, I'm not 100% sure about those.
I believe MBBFord is correct, The trim running along the truck is definitely aluminum, and I think the wheel arch moldings are steel. Pollishing the aluminum is pretty tough, but if you do it, use a good wax or sealer on it when you're done. It'll help the shine last longer.
Buying a polishing kit would prolly be the best thing to do.
I polished my front grille with a drimel tool, buff *****, and a polishing compound, don't the easyest, or quickest way at all.
Some have even said to use a solivent to get rid of oxidation, and then go back and polish it, just another step(not really needed) to me.
Hey! Try a magic eraser and a little elbow grease. Remember wet the eraser first and wring it out. I think on the 78 and 79 the trim was made of steel and chrome. My 73 is all aluminum trim.
