Found a nice original glass for $40. Installed the seal and left sitting flat on an old tire overnight. Came back in the a.m. and their was a crack right down the middle. I guess the extra weight of the rubber hanging on the ends stressed the glass and cracked it. Also, looks like it will be very difficult to install the wide chrome trim into the gasket. Anyone have any pointers or tricks to how they install the rubber and the trim. Also.....I realize I should have not let it sit overnight but stood it up vertical when completed. Still kicking myself in the butt. I can pick up another piece of glass brand new local for $115 so I want to be sure to do everything right installing the new piece.
Oh, this brings back bad memories. I cracked my original glass trying to install it. I cried uncle and found a local shop that installed a new windshield using my new seal for $140. Given how much force they were applying to the glass without it breaking, I'm thinking older glass is more brittle. Unless you've installed glass before, I'd suggest having a pro do it.
I have installed glass a few times but most of the time i pay somebody , less stress for me. If you store glass , store it on it's edge with some kind of padding under it. Just lying flat stresses the glass with it curved up or down. I was in the construction trade for years and found out if you place a large window flat on the floor or lawn and go to lift it , they can break. No need to say how i found out. __

Thanks!
Ugh...Sorry about the back luck!
I just put original glass back in during my resto and was super nervous of a shatter. I was going to do the chrome trim too but the glass shops wouldn't touch it. Real pita and instead of pushing my luck, I ended out getting the weatherstrip w/o the chrome trim. It went in without any problems. We put the rubber around the glass and went straight to install.
1973/76 F100/350, 1977 F100/350 before serial number O80,001:
The stainless steel (not chrome) windshield reveal mouldings are placed in the groove of the weather strip FIRST.. then the weatherstrip is installed on the glass.
For decades, this same procedure was used with ALL cars and trucks that came with w/shield reveal mouldings.
But finding auto glass shops in today's world that know...is getting harder and harder. Beginning in the 1980's (and thru today), the windshields are glued in, the reveal mouldings have gone bye-bye.
And btw: The clear/tinted windshields are the same: 1967/79 F100/750 & 1978/79 Bronco...but the 1967/72 F100/750 weather strips are different.
I went down this same road with the windshield in my '78. I liked the look of the wide stainless trim so I decided to get the seal with the groove in it that allowed for the trim. Put the seal on first, then had some friends help put the trim in the grooves (which was a battle in itself) then went to install and the windshield broke on the install. Gave up and called a local glass company to put it in. Install and windshield together was around $250. Wish I would have just done that from the beginning. The installer groaned a bit when he saw the trim, but he got er done and all is good now!
Bummer about your winshield, 73.
The stainless moldings will probably be the only deviation from original trim on my '77. I like the way the moldings look and plan to add them when I change out my cracked windshield, when I repaint it.
Well good price for a used one, but I can get new and installed for $90...... that is after I got one for free and paid $50 for a no guarantee install.....
All this was after I put one in and cracked it twice trying to finish up the trim....never again, let the pros do it.
Thanks for the input! I thought about the stainless first but seems like that would make it difficult to install the seal on the glass. If I could get new glass and install for $90 it would be a no brainer. They want about $260 installed.
What's the deal with the back glass as well. Can't seem to even get the glass in the small slot groove for the window. It's a worse pain than the front was....
Do you guys have pictures of this chrome or stainless moulding?
1977 F100/350's from serial number O80,001, 1978/79 F100/350 & Bronco use a one piece flexible plastic chrome windshield reveal moulding and a joint clip.
The weatherstrip is also specific to this moulding, but...
1973/79 F100/350 Customs do not have w/shield reveal mouldings, so the weatherstrip without these mouldings has no groove in it.
D3TZ-1003110-E .. W/Shield Weatherstrip-Use with stainless steel windshield reveal mouldings: 1973/76 F100/350 & 1977 F100/350 before serial number O80,001.
D7TZ-1003110-B .. W/Shield Weatherstrip-Use with one piece flexible plastic chrome windshield reveal moulding: 1977 F100/350 from serial number O80,001, 1978/79 F100/350 & Bronco.
Stainless molding (wide) goes in the seal after the seal is on the windshield and before going in the truck. However, as already mentioned, I think that would be very hard to install.
Flexible (Plastic) chrome lock strip goes in after windshield is in the truck. Takes a special tool to install but isn't tool bad.
The guy I bought my glass and seals from was saying that newer glass is thinner than OEM glass so you need to pay attention to the seal and use OEM seal on OEM glass. I was getting new glass and wanted new seals anyways so didn't make much difference to me.

I recently put in a rear slider using a video that someone posted from You Tube, super simple.
