electrical problem

A friend has a '92 Ranger, 4.0 w/m.t. the problem is it kills at random intervals, but restarts with no problem. The CEL has been on since this started, but I do not have a code reader or a Pepboys, Autozone, etc. Our parts store is minimal at best. Any hints on what/how to check? please?

I can guess, check the fuses, make sure the wires are stable and their isnt a loose connection.
