How's it going? I am looking to replace the 3 badges on my truck. I originally wanted to acetone them but apparently it doesn't work on pre 1999 models or something. Does anyone know if my emblems are held on by some sort of double-sided tape or pins? I'm not sure, guessing it's the latter. How would I get them off as well? I'm going to be purchasing new ones from the dealer so I can acetone them and I assume the newer ones are held on by tape. Thanks.
They're held on by double-sided tape. The badges have locating pins that fit into corresponding holes in the fenders and tailgate, but the pins are not secured by any type of fastener on the back side of the fender or tailgate.
Are you sure the badges have pins in the back with holes in the various panels? One of the things thats common in the European car forums is "de-badging" to remove the model numbers. I was considering removing "expedition" and the eddie bauer plate to achieve a cleaner look.
I'm glad I haven't done it yet... I'd hate to have a couple holes back there!
I know from personal experience that the 97-99 Expy badges are attached with double-sided tape and locator pins. The fenders and rear hatch have locator holes for the pins to rest in to guarantee that they are installed straight and level. Anything after a '99 I haven't seen with the badges stripped off so I can't speak to that. I'm also not going to tear mine off of my '03 to find out
I see. Well that's good to hear, I didn't want the pins to actually be secured to the backside. Is there a special way to remove them or do I just pry them off with a screwdriver making sure that the tip is covered so I don't scratch anything?
Take a piece of fishing line and slip it under a corner of the emblem. Use a sawing motion to cut thru the tape. No worries about chipping the paint w/ a screwdriver .
