In my never ending quest for a cleaner looking truck I'm considering removing the badges from my fenders and tailgates and I've got a few questions for someone who's done it before.
1. Are there locating pins on the badges, thus meaning there are holes in the fenders to line them up?
2. How strong is the adhesive used on them? Strong enough to pull off paint? My buddy took a Cummins emblem off his Ram and the adhesive was so tough that it ripped the paint in a spot the size of a quarter right down to primer.
Is there a special process I should do to remove them safely? Soak in acetone or adhesive remover or something? I don't want to use acetone because it would remove the black from the badges if I ever want to put them back on.
Anyone have pics of their truck with badges removed?
If there are no pins, I've had very good luck with using waxed dental floss and slowly working it back and fourth breaking the seal. Not to say it works on every brand, but it has worked for me in the past.
Im not sure if there are locating pins but i would guess no. If confirmed there isin't try using a hair dryer to loosen the adhesive. You can use a heat gun but be carefull not to concentrate the heat in one area.
Yes, there are locator pins on the fender badges. I know because I removed them to put my custom badges in their place. I don't know if the tailgate has one or not because that is the only factory badge I have left. The fender badges, door badges and both oval badges I swapped.
Edit: On second thought I just noticed that you had an 02 5.4. They might still have locator pins, but I don't know bout that far back. Sorry, jumped the gun on that one.
Something that has worked for me in the past is a Bondo spreader. It's easy to work in at the edge of the emblems and just move it back and forth working it down the length of the emblem until it's off.
Yes the badges all have locating pins behind them on the fenders and tailgate. The only exception is the Powerstroke badge on the door if you have the diesel.
Awesome! I suppose if I can't remove them it would look good to have '05+ badges on there, but all black with silver lettering instead of the other way around like stock is.
I just removed some badges tonight. I just used a hair dryer to heat the badges up and then dental floss on one side to break the seal got my finger underneath and then just gently pryed the emblem off. Super easy as long as you heat the tape up on them.
It won't pull the paint off but on certain colors and how old the truck is the color under the emblems could be a extremely different color.
