Had a laser hit "once" on the car in front of me, ever since then it's been when it's just me. If you are alone verses instant on, you are toast if speeding. I feel pretty safe at 5 over though, usually they have bigger fish to fry.
I've got to put my vote for the Valentine on this topic. Having the ability to see from which direction the radar signal is coming from and knowing how many different radar signals are hitting you is INVALUABLE!
Say your driving along with your basic detector. You know that the grocery store sends out a signal from it's auto-open doors so you start ignoring the detector whenever you drive by. But today there's a cop shooting in the area and you are BUSTED becuase you were ignoring what you think is a nuisance alarm. If you had the Valentine, you'd know that today there's 2 signals where there's usually only one so you better slow down.
With the Valentine you get on the freeway and it starts warning. Your arrows let you know that the signal is from behind you. It's a weak signal that doesn't increase in strength as you cruiser along. This tells you that the cop is following behind you at the same speed as you. If you can't see the cop behind you then go ahead and speed up because you're safe. If a stronger signal comes in from a cop ahead on the freeway, the Valentine will tell you that a stronger signal is coming from ahead, but you'll also know that there's another signal out there (the one from behind you've been tracking).
Once you have those arrows and bogey counter, you'll never go back to any other radar detector.
Well when i tworked I liked my 8500 x50 but now that it is less then 6 months old and needs service I am not so sure how much I like it. I have been on hold for over an hour now!
Allow me to add my voice to the V1 crowd. I have one for each of my daily drivers.
I used their remote displays in both, installing in the dash or console. Now, while the main unit stil needs to be on the windshield...it never lights up...especially useful at night.
V1s also use normal phone cords for power, etc. I got a single outlet extension phone cord that has a little box on the end to plug into. I then emblem taped that to the very top of the windshield and ran it down the A pillar. The rest of the wiring, box, etc, are behind the dash. These cords can be shortened, and have a new end put on with simply phone tools from Lowes.
Anyhow..I then made a short length cable to run from the unit to this plug that's mounted on the very top of the windshield in the black part. I leave the little cable on the detector and just stick it to the window and plug it in. No stretchy cords, etc.
There are some websites that are really down on V1s and I'd bet it has more than something to do with the fact that they cannot sell them. V1s only come direct.
