Does the 1 on my DVOM on ohm setting mean infinite? Cause if so, then I guess I know the answer to that test.

I was just messing with it and I noticed it would idle rough occasionally with some black smoke coming out of the exhaust. It would do this, then the rpms would kick up a bit and it would smooth out. It repeated this a few times during ten minutes of idling after a short drive. Does this symptom tell anyone anything?

I'm not surprised that the TFI/distributor is warm, it gets hot back there.

What part of the test are you unsure about, the diagram in the beginning should help with the pins/wires.

Can someone thats more familar with the EGR system on his truck help a little??

I'm looking at test DD11 for service code 34. I don't understand the acronyms 'STO' and 'STI'. The directions say to connect negative DVOM lead to 'STO' and it also says to jump 'STI' to signal return. I'm afraid I don't know what that means.

Does the up and down idle with black exhaust potentially mean anything? I know it's not normal.

Check out the link "pulling eec-iv codes" in the tech info thread at the top of this forum, section two, righthand diagram.

I never like to see black smoke but I would worry about it until you get the codes cleared.

Thank you, now I know what those acronyms mean. I'll try that test out tomorrow, but wouldn't disabling the EGR valve take this problem out of the equation?

Also, could someone explain to me what infinite ohm resistance would look like on a DVOM? Does the 1 on my screen mean infinite? If so I guess I can guess that my IAC is good, but that wouldn't explain the problems I'm having... This sure has been frustrating, but I thank everyone for trying to help.

the 1 on the DVOM indicates the actual resistance is out of the range of the setting that you have it on.

for code 34, focus on the EGR valve position sensor. within the pinpoint tests you got from ken should include a test for the EVP sensor. I bet that is the problem.

Then any idea what I'm doing wrong on the testing the IAC for a short? No matter what setting I use I only get '1' on the resistance meter. The test calls for one lead to be on a solenoid connector prong and one on the housing if the IAC is good resistance is supposed to be greater than 10k ohms. I've tried all the settings, and all the lead, prong, housing combinations with no results. I even cleaned the IAC off but that didn't help either.

I just did another code test during KOER and got some new codes. I received: 41, 34, 13, 72 and 73. This test was performed with the EGR valve vacuum line unplugged and capped. Also when I did the wide open throttle a nice black cloud of smoke came out the tailpipe.

I'm still troubleshooting the EGR system and am stuck on the IAC testing, but it seemed to be clicking while I was running the KEOR test.

The 1 on your DVM, depending on the scale you have it set to, could be indicating infnite resistance, meaning the circuit is open.

Make sure the ohms scale is set to at least 1000X when your trying to measure a 10K or higher value. The meter reading you then get, times the scale you have the meter set to, is the circuits value in ohms.

So if you have it set to 1000X & read 10 on the meter, you multiply that by the scale factor (1000) & get 10,000 ohms.

If you still get a 1, on the 1000X scale, move up progressively until you are on the highest ohms scale, if your still reading 1, then the circuit is infinite resistance, or open circuit.

I tried testing it in place but had some difficulty, mostly the fact that it's hard to reach. I'm going to uninstall it later and try testing it again. Currently I just have the EGR valve disabled, the truck seems to run a little bit better this way. It still has the rough ride and black smoke issue going on though.

Your only testing the IAC for a short, sounds like it's fine.

I would reconnect the EGR, reset the computer and drive it for a day before pulling any codes.
