what do i look for on a 460 engine to find out what year it is, i bought a donar truck from a guy that he had started to swap a 460 in where a 400 was want to put it with a 4 speed transmission, next question is a common one but never been able to find out a definate answer on what combination of clutch and flywheel to use after i find out if it externialy balanced on internal
Can't help with the clutch business. But look on the vibration damper and on the timing chain cover for the PN#. Cylinder heads are also marked. Post what you find. However these engine in a box deals are often not reliably identified. Main difference is whether it is internal or externally balanced. After that you may just have to go through it piece by piece.
Look at the spacer behind the harmonic balancer and see if it has a BIG counter weight cast on it. That will determine what flywheel you will need. Post back what you find and we can tell you what you need. You can also click on my username and view all my post and find the info you need.
OK, It's internal balance. You need a flywheel off of a 360/390 motor and if your using a 400 bellhousing use a diaphram style pressure plate. The flywheel on a 429/460 is deeper in the bellhousing than a 351m/400 so things get tight and the throwout bearing fork hits the pressure plate if it is too thick. It's best to pre-assemble the clutch and bellhousing to check clearance before putting it in the truck.
just for info if you have D3Ve heads, and an internal balanced crank, the engine is between a 73-78, if that helps any. greenhighboy is correct on his info just though I would throw that in.
