How many bolts hold one of the valve covers on? Pull the starter and post back the casting number underneath on the block..... post the casting numbers of the heads, on the bottom of the head, just above the exhaust manifold in the center, it should be something like D0VE-C
This is cut and pasted from a post of torque1st out of the 73-79 forum. Is this in a truck, is this just a bare motor? your being too vague.
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 12.7" wide the 351C is narrow.
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
Thanks
Just engine
No truck
no pasting
Just been to have a look getting a bit dark to see but after scratching some dirt off I found a code on one of the heads, D3VE A2A on the side and D7 by the springs.
I will have a look at the block tomorrow but as far as I can see the only numbers visable to me are the ones I posted eailier(the block is clean)
Thermostat housing is on intake.
casting code of the heads really narrows it down...
its not a 335 series, too early.....
I doubt its a windsor.....
That leaves FE and 385 series.... I know for a fact that 385 series have the thermostat housing on the intake, because I own one.... I also know that casting code as a 460 head, arent FE motors head casting codes with a "T" for truck instead of a "V" for lincoln, ie. C6TE?
Ill betcha betcha you have a 460, but we need valve cover bolt count first.
The "D" would indicate a 70's casting. The head numbers are not an FE head casting, and the "T" came into play after they started putting the FE in trucks (1965 was the first truck year). If the valve covers are flat across the top and that motor is on the big and wide side, I'm going with the 385 series, which could be a 429/460.
rolled the engine over and there it was DIVE 2AB, good stuff!
no valve covers, M.I.A
there are 7 bolt holes on the top of the heads.
so I take it is the 385 series?
Time to explain
I am looking for a engine with a lot of acceleration, top end speed not too fussed about.
what do you think the best option would be for me?
Looks like the engine block has been reconditioned i.e. new gaskets on front, clean as a whistle.
The heads look like they have never been touched.(been around the block)
there is a edgal brock performer with it and the original intake is also there with it.
No carburetor at all.
extractors with it. don't look too flash.
haven't decided what it will be going in yet? but looking and looking...
it also has a c4 gear box would that be able to handle what I want?
I guess it would require a 9 inch diff?

Yes, its an earlier 70's 385 series, probably a 460.

The one you've got will work great, those two attributes are more of a function of gear ratio, but a 460 will get the job done for sure

I dont know much about C4's, but if you dont go too crazy with your build I THINK you'll be okay, a 9inch rear should work too....
