I have a 79 F-250 4x4 the truck came with a 400 but my uncle put a 460 in for more power. The problem is i dont know what year the 460 is and my uncle cant remember. Is there an easy way to find out what year the motor is. Also are there any big diffrences in 460s that i need to know about beacause i will be putting headers, intake, and a cam in it.
Thanks Chase.
If you pull the starter off there should be a serial number on the block. Get it and post it and you shall get your answer. I am too tired right now to explain how to read the numbers.
People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.
BOSS_358 from what i could see its DIVE-A2B and then a sideways 8 about 2 inches away. If its possible i would like to know as much as possible about this year. If its long you can email me at willms3@swbell.net

That's a D1VE-A2B which means it's a 71 block casting. In order to find out more on the performance potential of the motor you need to look at the head casting numbers which are on the ledge above the exhaust ports.
From what i could see the head casting numbers are D0VE-A (0 is a zero)
Sounds about right for that engine. It's an early 70's (70 or 71) "non smog" type motor with 75.8 cc comb. chambers, 2.08/1.66" I/E valves, non adjustable valve train. Good basis for a real performance build up if you choose to go that route.
You guy are awsome thanks for all the help. The motor had the egr plate on the intake but i took that crap off and put a spacer in. This christmas i want to put in a edelbrock performer RPM intake and a Lunati Bracket Master II cam. Maybe a new timing chain. Would all this work pretty good on my motor. What should my timing be set at and what is the Compression ratio 8:1 or 8.5:1.
Thanks Chase

The Performer RPM is designed for upper level performance as opposed to low end grunt which is what trucks are all about...but it's your call. The 00096 grind looks like the better cam for that manifold, it really depends on what you're looking for from the motor. I'd say your C.R. is 10:1 or 10.5:1 with those heads. Sorry I don't know the timing specs off the top of my head. Maybe someone else can help you there.
Thanks for all the info. Im gunna have to go to the airport for gas now. hehehehe
Thanks
