question about exhaust

i have a 2001 f350 that i just bought about a month ago since i bought i put a edge juice module w/atitude and K&N cold air intake. and of course i had the muffler cut off. well today i called a diesel performance shop and they told me that running a straight is bad for the turbo and that i either need to buy the bigger exhaust like a 4" or put a muffler on it to make restriction i have never heard this before. has anybody else any info write back

As far as I know as long as ytou do not overheat the turbo you should be fine. You may want tu put a Pyrometer on it.

The larger exhaust will help keep the exhaust temps down. You will not do any damage without a muffler. If you don't have gauges you better get them.

I was reading in Off-Road Adventures magazine (dubya dubya wubya dot oramagazine dot c o m) that if you run 4" exhaust (turbo back) then it would reduce the backpressure. I'm going to start my upgrades with the cold-air intake, and then as money permits: 4" exhaust, then the edge chip.

You don't want backpressure on a turbo. If you have backpressure it 's harder for the turbo to spool. The bigger the exhaust on a turbo vehicle the better.

I just put them on about a week a go. Removed the rear bumper and moved the hitch 10.5 inches further under the truck. We'll see how it works tonight at the pulls.

they were feeding you a bunch of BS so you would give them your business. yes, backpressure is bad for aft-turbo, but saying running with no muffler is harmful is just bullcrap. yes 4'' will be better, and it is going to make it easier, plus lower the EGT's. plus he has the edge juice with attitude, so it has the gauges built in

woodrow,

RUN FAST from that place, if that's a sales approach then they are just lying, if they really believe it then they will really mess up your truck if they work on it. Dropping the muffler is a low cost way to drop EGT's period, won't hurt anything. A mandrel bent system will flow more sound better and drop EGT's more and not have any of the potential to drone like a straight pipe or a muffler less stock system, but it costs more too. Call us if you have any questions we'll be glad to Help you.
