muffler questions????

I have a 06 6.0 with a superchips flashpaq. My question is can I replace just the muffler with an aftermarket one or do I need to replace the whole exhaust. If so what kind of muffler should I ask for? Also if I went to a muffler shop and they removed the stock muffler and just put a piece of straight pipe in is that the same as ordering a muffler delete pipe. Thanks

villestrip,

Yep you can straight pipe it which is the same as a muffler delete pipe. If you want to swap just the muffler the BTM muffler has been popular for years on the diesel trucks.

Hope this helps

just put a piece of straight pipe in, these motors sound to good to have a muffler on them.

villestrip,

By removing the muffler and running a straight pipe, you will get a little less restrictive exhaust, which will result in lower EGT and better scavenging. Fuel mileage gains will be little to none existant.

Just removed my BTM and straight piped- as said above, these motors sound too good to have a muffler on them. Definately turns heads!

Straight piped mine several months ago and no problem. Sounds great without the muffler, I say do it, you won't be dissapointed with the sound. Don't expect too much else other than good sound though. No real milage difference.

I was "lucky"enough to have the first year powerstroke back in 94
The cat was the first thing to be removed, kept it though for any issues or resale.
I've got to tell you, That truck was in the shop for everything!I had a file on that beast thicker than my payables file. Warranty covered everything from injectors to a couple clutches, main seals, front AND rear leaf springs, rotors, ect! all under the 3/36 bumper warr. no one ever mentioned the exhaust pipe, it sounded tough!
To the service dept, I was known as the "pizza man". Everytime they'd see my truck in the service parking area, they'd say "I know what we're having for lunch" However, I never did hear "aw man, pizza again"?!
Gotta say that truck was used and abused and various dealers all worked on that beast, never a mention of the missing kitty.
Now, 12 years or so later, time changes and so do dealers, so I could only speculate as to what would be if I removed it from another truck.

I have a 06' F-350 6.0, I removed muffler and tailpipe, purchased a tailpipe kit from Jegs, (3.5" Flowmaster 4-pc kit) and a stainless 3.5" tip, 2 band clamps, 1- stainless hanger and exited the exhaust right behind the pass chrome-tube step,,,I like the way it sounds,, it really Barks from 2,200 rpm and up,,and thats with the Cat on,,,I tried it with no Cat first, straight piped,,WoooHoo but way to loud for me,,with the Cat on tones it down just enough, now maybe the straight pipe out the original position with tail pipe,,but I wanted something different,,no CEL light at all,,and so far I notice no Blackening of the right rear wheel. Later,,,,,,Mark
