Having some problems and believe it has to do w/ the front 4WD. When accelerating from a stop I feel the truck shuddering but stops once going. Also when I turn sometimes the front wheels feel like they are binding a little. Local oil change place checked the fluid and it appeared fine and not dirty. Where do I start to troubleshoot this? Transmission shifts fine, 4wd appears to function, I can hear a clunk when shifting into 4Lo.
I think the binding in front when youre turning is some what normal....remember when in 4 wheel drive....the back tires are pushing forward while the front tires are trying to pull to whatever direction youre turning and the back tires are shoving the front tires forward. I guess thats why they tell you to use 4 wheel drive in slippery conditions because there has to be a percentage of slip so the 2 axles don't fight with each other. The clunk you hear when going into 4 wheel low I also think is normal...its the gear box switching to the lower gear ratio. If Im wrong, someone else speak up since Im new to the 4wd world also. This is the general consensus I got when asking similar questions.
Same year, same problem. There are lots of threads on the forum about this. Usually it is a slow turn eaither right or left. I know it feels like it binding in the front, but the source of the problem seems to be the spider clutches in the rear limited slip differential. I changed out the diff fluid in mine and it seems to have made the problem disappear. Remember to add the friction modifier (smells terrible!). This is somewhat expensive since the differential fluid is about $20 a quart. Do a search for more info. Some people use a fluid that is not FORD, and sometimes these manufacturers claim that you do not need the friction modifier with their oil. I think you do and the modifier is the inexpensive part of the fix.
'99 - 5.4awd, Yesterday I replaced the front Right Tire. Mine too now has this issue. It pulls to the right, and has a slipping in front right. Feels like 4x4 mode is sticking. Also, strange noise/ vibration coming from right wheel. Swapped left and right wheel, no more pulling but noise still present and still sticking or slipping feel. Any guesses? axtell@hotmail.com
Just realized something that might be confusing some of yall. This problem is with the switch in the 4AWD not actually set in 4WD.

The solution to the shuddering from stop in A4WD on my 99 was to change out the transfer case / auto trans fluid. Have never touched either the front or rear differentials, only the middle transfer case every 15K and the automatic trans every 30K. Whenever the problem returns, I just change the fluid. I let the stealer do the automatic trans - to messy. Have ~70K now. Getting it out of the transfer case is easy, you need a squeeze bottle to fill it up again. Search under shudder, this is a common problem with the early models.
I have an 01 Expedition. The problem of shuddering occurs when accelerating slowly from up a hill or slight grade. the problem was the rear axle lower contol arms. They were both either (too short or too long,) This affected the pinion angle, this is a known problem. I had it at Ford twice and they kept it for 4 days. They said ford had a batch of the wrong size arms installed from the factory. The dealer had a factory engineer come in to measure the angle. Both arms were replaced under factory warranty.
OK..I too have the "Shudder" upon acceleration while turning. I looked in my manual to find which fuse is "104" but I couldn't find that number. The only one that was close was 14. What am I missing??? Can someone direct me in??
