We recently bought a 97 Explorer. Today i craweled under it to adjust the emergency brake. Low and behold there is no adjustment on it. I looked it up in the book and it shows an adjustment. Our Explorer does have disk brakes on all four wheels. Is the adjustment in the back wheels?
although your exploder has disk on all 4 wheels, there is a small shoe brake inside the rear disk. the shoes are self adjusting, too small for "emergency" braking, so IMO they are parking brake.
The shoes are a PIA to change and cost almost triple what a full size shoe cost.
Most folks forget they have them, and after a couple of forgotten applications, they are worn to nothing.
Thanks Aquanaut; So they are not worth doing if i get your drift. The Explorer has 70k on it and they don't hold anything. Does this seem about right to you? Or are they just stuck ?
Thanks again
unless you need them to pass inspection (like I do)... then you get to pay to get them adjusted and/or replaced on a yearly basis as they tend to crap out even when you do use them properly... and once they need replacing getting the damn rotor that is over them out is pretty much impossible... I spent about three hours on that this afternoon and gave up as I did not want to do more damage to other stuff around there. I now need to find a shop that might not check that aspect of the inspection as closely... or shell out the 350 bucks that I do each year!
I just replaced mine on my 02'.Right side shoes came off the metal, left was still intact.Seems water damage is a big problem on these.Bendix shoes were $48.00.Ford shop wanted $160.00 just for the shoes plus labor. Was not too bad of a job except for the one pin on each side is a pain to hold in while putting clip on and then if it falls out it is a pain to get back in the hole.
Historically these park-brakes are known to dissolve and fall apart over time...my did on our 96 Ex. I do alot of our own work on the vehicles but decided to pass on this job to our local mechanic when I had all four brakes done. I did not like the idea of not being able to secure the vehicle when parking on an incline. I stopped in to the shop to see what the inside of the parking brake looked like and was glad to let them have the job.
