Emergency Brake Adjustment

I own a '99 F-350, CC, Long Bed with the 7.3 PSD. The emergency brakes do not hold the truck. With the emergency brake pedal depressed it does provide some resistant but not enough to hold the truck.

How do I adjust the emergency brakes

How do I adjust the emergency brakes
These brakes are only parking brakes, in no way would i trust them in a emergency situation. I have taken the shoes completly off and cleaned everything up and adjusted them to find out a few weeks later I was saying the same thing as you did...
it does provide some resistant but not enough to hold the truck....especially when it is in gear.

Adjust just like anyother brake shoes, remove rubber plug on back side of brake backing plate, use a screwdriver or brake adjusting spoon. Turn it unitl you hear it drag and back off until it does not drag. If I remember correctly you move the spoon tip/screwdriver in the down direction on both sides to tighten brakes. Clockwise on driver side looking back towards front of vehicle and Anti-Clockwise on passanger side looking back towards front of vehicle.

There is a slot on the back side of rear wheel drum. Use a flat blade screw driver and turn the adjuster that u can see in the slot, you should hear clicks as you turn that adjuster. count the clicks and repeat on other side. be carefull not to over adjust.

gto ron, hi on my e-brakes what I did was tighten them up until you get a good drag on the wheel then just back them off until you cant hear them touching . mine hold real good. mine is 2001 but I think there the same set up. you really cant adjust both wheels the same amout counting clicks because chances are they are not the same. just my opinion. 01psd

GTO,

I use the emergency brake before I put the tranny in park to prevent any load being applied to the tranny (I come to a complete stop and put the tranny in neutral first).
However!!!!!!! I was on a slight grade with a trailer one time and broke the front cable trying to stop the truck from rolling, it was the short cable that goes from the pedal to the long cable on the underside. About a hundred bucks worth of short cable.

Now I have the wife get out and block the tires if I'm on a grade with a load, or I find a flat spot.

Hey honey I think I dropped my wallet in front of the rear tire on your side!

It worked for me the first time.

If the 99 has disc brakes on the rear then your E-Brake is a small drum brake inside the disc. My E-Brakes stopped working too. When I took things apart to find out why I found the axle seal to be leaking oil onto the brake shoes. Bought new shoes and seal. Be sure to refill the differential with new oil!

I weigh 12,200 Lbs. as she sits and the E-Brake will hold on a moderate grade but I wouldn't expect to stop it while moving.

My truck has disc brakes in the rear. Over the holiday weekend I will take the rear brakes apart and see what is going on.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Im having parking brake problems too. The other day I went to get coffee leaving my truck running and ended up finding it in the middle of the road stopping all traffic. A few months ago I backed my 31 ft trailer into its parking area, place the truck in neutral and put the brakes on. When I unhooked the trailer from the truck.....yes here it comes... the truck proceded down the hill to rest against a tree. $3500 worth of damage.

I have taken the brakes apart and replaced all parts. Put it all back together and adjusted the stars. Did the back up adjust trick. Tried everything. What is next? Replace all cables?

Thanks
