Cable Card

Heres a question for the electronic whizzes, I bought a 42" Zenith Plasma TV. It has a slot for a cable card. I had the cable guy out and here is what I ended up with. The card will read the information from the cable signal (i.e. when you change the channel it will display the info. "ABC, Western, etc") but I don't get the channel programs, I just get a screen saver that says no signal. I am getting the signal because it shows the information and his tester shows the signal. It is also my understanding that some tv manufacturers have had to send software upgrades for the cards to work properly.

Any experts have ideas?

Thanks.

That slot is for HDTV. You need a digital input for it to work. It replaces the "cable box".

I just upgraded from the analog cable to digital which is now the service I have going to it. With the package I bought, I also got a cable box ($10 pm) and placed it on the other tv, it works the way it should.

Thank you for the input.

Actually, the cable card slot is for the QAM tuner or digital cable tuner. The cable company will have to come and install a cable card in the tv and set it up. It sounds to me like the tech was there and installed a card is that true? If so, it is most likely a problem with the cable companies setup.

Most of the cable companies have been reluctant to adopt cable card technology because it cuts into their profit by allowing customers to get digital cable without having to rent a box from them. That's why most of them had deals with the cable box manufacturers before so you couldn't buy a box on your own, and why most of them still won't allow you to hook up your own box.

The goverment passed a bill requiring them to support cable cards, but the companies tend to play dumb about them, don't train their technicians, or charge just as much to rent the card as a box. Just keep on your cable provider and make sure they get the job taken care of, don't give up.

Yes, that is the card they put in, and it is not the $10 pm they charge for the box, it is $1.75 pm so your economics are probably correct. I just need to keep my patience but it is kind of p*&*&g me off.

Thank you

"but the companies tend to play dumb about them, don't train their technicians" I work as an installer for a cable company a nd in three years I've ony done two cable cards and yes, they don't train us at all on trouble shooting the. The only useful thing I might offer is , did the cable guy call into a dispatcher to have the cable card activated? there are numbers on the card that I had to call in and have it set up right in the account if it wasn't set up right, it wont work.also is it possible that there is a different input you need to change to on your tv's menu options? You might have to select a spot on your tv's menu to activate your cable card port...

I love the cable companies, they are hilarious in what they require of you as a customer to go through. Where I live *** Communications has a monopoly on the cable market, the only thing you can get outside of them is satellite (I have DirecTV). Verizon is supposed to enter the market with their own television service sometime later this year, waiting to see them two companies go at it.

Yes they set up the card and called the numbers in, both times they were out. And yes it is the only cable choice in the area. Time Warner had Everest KC as competition for a short while but Everest ran out of money and stopped expanding.

Still not working for you? Man I'd be on the phone with that company ranting and raving until they had it fixed. There is no excuse, if it's something that they have to install and something you can not do on your own. What are you paying them for?
