VCR Hookup thru cable box...problem

Set up:

1.) Wall --> VCR --> Digital Cable Box --> TV

2.) Wall -->Digital Cable Box --> VCR --> TV

I had it set up like 2, but you could only watch the channel you were recording. So i changed it to be like 1. Now i can watch any channel and record any regular cable channel.

Problem: When i have it set up like 1, the recorded image or anything i watch through the VCR (channel wise) is very 'noisy'. Its staticky. As i go up the channels it gets worse, then better. On all the other tv's the picture look fine straight out of the wall. I thought it may be the VCR, but the picture looks great set up like 2.

Anyone have any ideas on what the problem may be?

Is there 2 outputs in your cable box? No, wait, that won't work either. I just hooked mine up so I can't record anything. I guess it's time for both of us to buck up for a DVR.

It sounds like your VCR's tuner isn't very good, or there is an electrical noise problem somewhere in the VCR. What kind of inputs do you have on your TV? What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

My suggestion would be to try something like this if possible:

Wall
coax cable
900mhz splitter
coax cable to cable box coax cable to TV input
coax cable to VCR
RCA cable to TV video input

This would allow you to record any channel from your cable box with your VCR (leave on channel 3) and watch any standard cable channel while you are recording (use TV's tuner).

Do you have a HDTV cable box? Because if you do, then you have the same problem I have. I can either record what I'm watching via a splitter, or nothing at all. I don't think there's any way around it. I can record normal programming, and watch something else, but I can't record HD and watch something else in HD. Not unless I want to buy another $300 HD cable box.

I would run a different type of output from the Digi box to the TV such as RCA or component, then you could watch whatever you want while you record
