Hi, 'just found this thread. I have had 2 champion winches from Costco. The 1st time I used the 1st one, the handle to freewheel the cable broke off inside (while I had a car attached). I exchanged it for another and the second time I used it (My fault, but..) the hook ran up to the fairlead while I was watching tire placement on my trailer. There was no automatic shutoff or other safety of preventative features. A couple seconds and the motor went up in smoke, literally.
Costco took it back though.
I mainly liked the trailer hitch cradle they come with.
I think they're junk, and am going to rebuild my old Ramsey.
I am looking at the same winch, it just seems that no one has to much experiance with them. I havent heard anything wrong with them, but then again i havent heard of anyone who has put them through alot. I am considering getting one to, anybody know what i should look out for?
They're not too bad for the price. I've had my Champion 10,000lbs(10587 Kit w/****** block/Speed Mount/Fairlead/Remote Switch) for alomost 2 years now. I haven't done any serious emergency pulls with it, but I did have a chance to move/slide 2 steel 30yard bins around a yard fairly full of debris (soaked wood in one and drywall in other) along a rough cement surface. The winch (10587) did a decent job. I was kind of impressed with it for what I paid for it.
There are lots of bad reviews on Champion products, but there also good ones. If you need something that you really need to count on when you're up in the mountains I would recommend spending more for a more proven heavy duty unit like a Warn. If you just need something for less serious use then the Champion is a good option especially if you buy from a store like Costco. They will exchange it with no questions asked if it craps out on you.

I've had my 10,000lbs Chanpion for a year now. Ive managed to pull myself out a few times, move a barn and most impressively pull out a dumptruck and I got video to prove it can do it YouTube - Pulling Out A Dumptruck
I think it's a pretty good winch really, pulling that dumptruck out at stalling speed the whole time and the motor never even got hot. It's quieter than a lot of the other winches out there, so it seems.
I agree with rick that you might want to get something more expensive if you really need to rely on it. Otherwise I think the CHampion is a good buy. There's quite a debate about them on pirate4x4 i think.
There you go. The Champion 10,000lbs winch seems to do a pretty good job.
Thanks for the video Nathan. Pulling the dump truck out shows it has some pulling power.

Nathan, I have read that these pull a higher amp draw than it's counterparts. I am assuming that might be true due to your jumper cable. Would anyone agree with this?

The manual states that it pulls 300A when pulling 10,000lbs and warn says their 9,000lbs draws 460A at 9,000lbs, and their 9,500 lbs draws 480A at full capacity. So the data would say no the champion winch does not seem to draw more power, but the champion also has a slightly less powerful motor which means it has slower spool rate.
While I have no experience with any other winches I cant really compare well. But I will say that running the winch off of our 2008 F-150 that is running we do need to let the battery recharge every few minutes but it doesn't take long. It more or less fits in with the duty cycle of the winch, which I almost question because even at near stall loads it does not heat up the motor at all. Running the winch of my 95 F-150 with a high idle at 1500-2000rpm I find there is almost no need to stop to allow the battery to recharge.

Thanks for the feedback!
I ask because I am thinking of one on my Suzuki Samurai which has a very small alternator and battery. I would hate to be stuck AND have a dead battery.

I guess I should add too that using our 93 ranger it needs to recharge a little more often than with the F-150, and I also feel that I don't get quite as much winching power. That can be solved by doubling the line.
Best solution for such a low power vehicle would be to rig up a way to make it idle high. That way it would be pumping out more amps.
In my experience with the cheap off brand winches, quality is very hit and miss, and the gear train is usually on the weak side, parts availability is interesting to say the least. I have one sitting here(can't remember the brand offhand) that needs one of the planetary gears, but, even though it's only 4 years old, it's obsolete and they no longer build parts to fit it. A few of my friends have run into the same issues. I have a 1972 Warn 8200 and a 1984 M12000, and lo and behold, parts are readily available for both, the 8200 is an oddball one year only winch to boot...
For the price, if they aren't going to see much heavy use, they are OK, if you are going to need to rely on it every weekend or such, stick with a known name brand. Warn as always is king of the hill.
Pierce is good stuff, well, at least their slow *** worm drive winches, can't speak for their planetary series.
One of the guys I wheel with is running one of those Smittybilt winches, has been for a year or so, the winch itself is fine, the contactors were junk, and the attachment for the control cable leaves much to be desired.
