There is a guy over there on Pirate that put one on his flat bed car hauler. He says it works really well in that situation. I am thinking about going down to Sams Club and getting one for my trailer. As to using it on a truck for recovery purposes, you probably get what you pay for.

Here is the link, decide for youself.

if the winch has a permanenet magnet they usually aren't worth more than the box they came in when it comes to self recovery. the problem is the magnet is always 'on' and with each use gets a little weaker. go with the series wound motor if ya can... which is just wires and metal until activated then it becomes a VERY strong magnet that doesn't get weaker.

i will be getting one like it to use on my almost finished gooseneck trailer.

I just looked at the specs. It is a permanent magnet.

well maybe the champion isn't all that bad as this ad says it has aseries wound motor. the motor should be ok but i would then be worried about the casing. it could end up being cheap, brittle, pot metal which can't be effectively welded! take it from me and my experince just go spend the money and get a warn. there is a reason they are so cheap!

btw, the box that champion winch comes in bothers me as it has a hardcore H2 on the front!

I agree with you Fishy but for a trailer winch that has a fairly good chance of being stolen it should be a decent deal.

Well, My buddy picked one up for 400 canuck bucks from costco a little while back and put it on his Yota. I got my 79 stuck ***** deep in a swamp and mud and a few critters (poor frog) decided to wind up in my air intake pipe. ****** blocked and the yota anchored to a 1ton dualie winched for about a good half hour of screwing around, and she lived another day. In reality, in that outting it paid for itself. Im not sure what my truck weighs, but it can create serious resistance with the 39's and not putting any power to the wheels... I almost bought one but dont have a costco card.

its pretty common knowledge with electric motors

series wound dont weaekn with each use, but the perm magnet is a good bit cheaper to produce, and they last, but not like a series wound motor

Interesting thread. I found it while googling "champion winch." I've seen a winch at the Burlington Costco, that LOOKED pretty good. But the price was a lot lower than Warn or even Ramsey. Description said series wound motor, and appearance is that of a planetary geared unit like my Ramsey REP8000. I've had the Ramsey for a number of years, usually out in the weather on my car transport trailer. I believe it has a permanent magnet motor.

I'm a bit suspicious of these cheap Chinese winches. It will be good if we can collect more experiences, like brian794x4 just told us about.

I'm not shopping hard for another winch right now, just curious. Another outfit that interests me is Pierce http://www.piercewrecker.com/ They show a good line of winches. Their PTO winch looks to me like an old Braden. They have a better price than Northern, on dump hoists. So far, all I've bought from them is a couple of winch control buttons and cables.

I bought a 7500 champion winch at sam's club used it couple of times, pulled my sons' tractor out of hole. It wont work now just clicks. I opened it up and it appears that the winding on the motor is burnt. The winch is just over a year old.

price of an item means very little. even where it is built means little now adays heck many of the products we use everyday come from china. i did see the champion winches at tsc here right along with the warn winches. about the only real differences i see in most winches is cosmetic. myself i am still deciding on a winch but you might also want to look on ebay or at gregsmithequipment.com.
