Burr, Winter Coming

what's everyone's thoughts on yes/no on cooling system adds of anti rust conditioner/water pump seal lube? brand and how often? every year or just off years between coolant antifreeze changes?

what brand of coolant, how often changed and mix ratio?

is anyone in southern no freeze zone not running antifreeze?

anyone using the new lifetime 10 years Dexcool?
any experience with the new polypropelene glycol non- poisonness antifreeze?

how do you dispose of old drained coolant?

who flushes the coolant system, how and how often?

I do a warm up straight multiple drain and fill with distilled water and final with 50% Zerex e. glycol or what ever is on sale every 2 years with bottle of Prestone anti rust cooling system conditioner lube (white bottle) every year.
still original hoses and water pump on '96 w over 150k.
we have drive by recycler here that picks up coolant roadside with garbage.

I just use a 50/50 mix of whatever happens to be on sale... name brands only though. but I also use calgon as an additive. it takes care of all scaling and actually have never thought about any other additives.

Always a 50/50 mix. I always use Prestone and have never been let down. You can also toss in a bottle of red line water wetter, doesn't hurt and will help some.

I change/flush (same thing to me, you don't just want to change it, you want to at least run some prestone flush through it.) every other year.

10 year coolant, BS, the coolant might last that long, but over time it does get contaminated and there is no filter to remove it. So the only way to clean it, is to replace it.

polypropelene glycol, do not touch with a ten foot pole. That stuff breaks down you metal (espcially on vehicles with alum heads/cast iron blocks), does not cool as effectively and when removed, still as poisoinous as the regular stuff. It is just a bunch of BS to make you feel better and pay more. All used coolant contains lead and heavy metals.

If you have a facility for recyling, take it there, otherwise dump it down your drain, and the treatment facility will take care of it (per my local gov sense no-one recycles it here.)

I do the same thing you describe, which I will be doing tomorrow to my 'Tour

I take the old coolant to my local radiator shop. They do recycle the stuff.

Zerex G-05 Coolant is good, it is a clear coolant, not green or orange as what is mostly seen. I've done some research on the internet, and have found a lot of favorable experiences with using the Zerex G-05 in older vehicles, aluminum or brass radiators. This also includes domestic makes, and Volvo and Sabaru enthusiasts give the Zerex a lot of compliments as well. Pep Boys carries the G-05 near me, for $8.99 a gallon. Also, Red Line's Water Wetter, RP's "Purple Ice" and "NoRosion" are good addtives, in clean cooling systems. Always run the proper amount of water. Too much coolant, and not enough water, can cause overheating, hotter than normal temps and makes the cooling system work harder. Those facts are all over the internet. Water (not tap) is important... Ed
