How is Katrina affecting you?

Up untill a few hours ago, It was just the gas price thing . (it probably wont rain here) One of my groomsmen calls me and tells me he got activated....."I'm like what tha, you already came back from over sea's" Turns out he's heading down south to clean up. It sucks that he won't be at the wedding, but itss all cool cause a lot more people that need him more than me.

Gas jumped 10 cents, and it's been raining since 7am...

I feel horrible for all those suffering.

Just Like the Tsunami in Thailand at Christmas.

It still makes me wonder why people live there knowing the risks of devastation that can result.

If you take a really good look around the world lately, either Earth is upset these days or something is mad at earth

Odd to mention the earth is upset. In the mid 1960s, the US had a couple of killer hurricanes (Betsy and Donna, I think) as well as a killer earthquake within a year or so ( one of those hurricanes was the last to swamp New Orleans). Nature happens.

I picked up a bunch of overtime tending to some localized flooding.

I wonder if these events run in cycles.

No rhyme or reason.

And we're expected to get the big quake here, in the next 40 years.

Don't forget, we're living on a volatile planet.

That whole area has been 'relatively' quiet for quite a long time too. I'm not saying they were due to be anihilated but I think people have just become accustomed to a calm environment and weren't prepared for what that area is capable of.

Yes, hurricanes/tropic storms come in cycles. I beleive they said that this last cycle has started around 1990 or so. I can't remember what the cycle was, it's something like 30 years on and 30 years off. According to what I have read though, expect another 10 - 20 years of hurricanes then 20 - 30 years of very few. There were a lot of hurricanes between 1930 - 60 then from 60 - 90 it was pretty slow.

Here in Norfolk, VA we are supposed to have a 'major' hurricane soon. A hurricane on the scale of a 3 - 5 sometime in the next 5 - 10 years. We are really over due in this area. We are heavily protected by the way that Eastern North Carolina sits in position to the way that hurricanes usually travel. We had Hurricane Isabel a couple years ago and it did a lot of damage around here, knocked out our power for weeks. Nothing on the scale of what Katrina did though.

I just can not get over some of these looters. I can understand getting yourself some food and water, maybe even some dry clothes. They were just showing on MSNBC people with full shopping carts running around a Wal-Mart smiling and basically shopping. They were just going from isle to isle, getting what they wanted clearing shelves.

Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

I guess we're all animals; some more primal than others.

Yep, we too are expecting one of those 8.0 to 9.0 quakes.

It's gonna make Loma Prieta look like a little wuss quake.

Oh well. Can't avoid it; in what ever place a person chooses to live.

How Katrina affected me: I lost power at 9:30pm Monday night, came back on at 5:30am Tuesday morning. Hard to sleep with no power and nothing but the sound of the wind howling outside. Had wind gusts here in excess of 55 mph. I lost a tree my late wife planted also, not to mention what seems like millions of leaves and tiny twigs that cover the 2 acres I own.

(am told one of the singular nice things about hurricanes is the weather a day or two after is usually crystal clear, since the storm tends to clear the air of all the scuz - not much of a consolation, unless you are really, really into stargazing - (no haze and no ground/city lights).)

Interesting to read of all the forecasts for things other than oil to be effected nationwide - coffee (big warehouse/shipping receiving area), airline tickets and construction material, for starters. Not sure how much rail traffic will be effected until they have a chance to check the tracks along the coast.

I'm helping with a project my son-in-law started at their house while as he is leaving for the MS. coast on a search rescue funtion with Georgia's emergency managemnt system (GEMA). He is with a local fire dept. and has always had a keen desire to help others. When he lived in NYC, three blocks from ground zero, he spent 3 wks on the bucket brigade hauling rubble from what was left of the world trade center. He's looking forward to pulling a few survivors out this time.

My heart goes out to all the families in those areas effected.

On the other hand I believe the gas and oil is a propaganda scandal to jam it to the regular Joe. Gas went up over night 20 cents a litre.
Sorry for the rant just rain mostly for us.

Fortunately our building is on high ground(as if N.O. has any!) and our condo is on the third floor. The first floor of our building was just storage, so I'll be waiting to hear from the management in a couple of weeks as to how everything fared.
