I live in Florida, my town is 220 feet above sea level. We're so close to Alabama we can see it on a clear day. Everyone has to live somewhere. You live in the Northwest. You do know that you stand a good chance of being killed in a eruption of one of those dormant volcanos you call "mountains" out there, don't you? There's no such place as a safe place to live. Move to the Midwest, tornado alley. The Northeast and the northern states, blizzards. The South and the Gulf States, hurricanes. The West Coast, earthquakes and wildfires. We all make our choices.
#1 my previous posts clearly state that I am only at risk of being nailed by a volcanic eruption. Sisters mountain is swelling and pointed my way.
#2 if or when my town gets leveled by a volcano, I'll move, I wont rebuild.
#3 if or when they come on tv and tell us to evacuate, I'm not going to sit at home and ride it out.
How is Katrina affecting you?
Its not. Its very sad to see what is going on over there, but God has his plan. I helped out by a small donation to the Red Cross, Hopefully it'll buy a few people much needed food and water...... Or just the fuel to bring the food and water others have bought over there. I'm so Grateful to be alive today, tragedy could strike tomorrow and the rolls would be reversed..... I'm in earthquake country.
My girlfriend is originally from Mandeville, LA, which is on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, and connected to New Orleans by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. She has family and friends there, and on Friday (9-2-05), she and her oldest son drove there to retrieve her two other sons. They had escaped to a hotel in Jackson, MS., but it's looking as though they might not be able to go back home for quite awhile. I was not in favor of her going so soon after the hurricane hit, but there was nothing I could do to change her mind, and actually, I am very proud of her for going to help.
Gas prices hit $3 a gallon here two days after the storm, which hits me in the operating expenses pretty hard.
I live about 3 hours from NO, and Katrina messed up a shipment or rims for me(american racing eagle alloys 186s) and now I can't get them and I was charged a restocking fee to send my tires back, because I don't have any rims to mount them on.
And gas just keeps going up more and more. $2.00 was bad anough, now it's $3.00-6.00 all around the us, because the oil companies in the gulf couldn't drill for like 1-2 days.
Besides the high gas prices I noticed there was no bottled water in the local store as charity groups have been buying it up and sending it south. Diapers, formula, baby food, and milk were low. This is the oddest thing, amd didn't get an explanation for it, Thursday morning I called my BP medicine in, that evening it wasn't filled. Told to come back after 2pm next day. Called and was told to come in after 8pm. After 8pm was told to come back on Tuesday after 2pm. Didn't check anywhere else as I have 30 day supply. Its just really strange. Another thing is I'd think the Ports would be on Orange or Red alert, but they are not?!?

I saw Larry King tonight and his guests are encouraging everyone to buy up supplies and trucks will pick them up for the ride south. Good excuse for the rest of us to drink beer, I guess.
That water is going to a good cause. I'm happy to see that General got things going down there. Those poor people have been through so stinking much.
it's hurting me big time in the wallet, gas has hit 3.99 for ht. marine diesel hit 319 and most of the owners i work for in the fall are pulling their boats out for the winter 3 months early. due to fuel prices. heck it's going to cost me about 150 a week to drive to my full time job. never mind what is heating oil going to cost?
i'm doing some heavy thinking about converting my wood burner to coal. drive over to pa and shovel it from the road side in some spots.
Some vehicles have an in-line fuse that will burn out to protect the intank pump from overheating and causing a possible explosion.
Minor note:
Gas went up to three bucks a gallon at the local store. Next thing I noticed was a sign saying purchases of gas were limited to twenty dollars worth at a time.
The very next day - it was limited to ten bucks at a time. Three and a third gallons...
store? i'm going to walk over to the farm grab a cow and get a gal of milk. can't aford the gas to get to the store thats 10 miles away. that would mean 1.5 gals round trip or $6.00 the milk is 4
Err... That's why I have a bicycle.
(Not to mention a backpack)
There are two country stores right close by. I only do serious shopping once a month, been doing that for a while now. Stock up and pay bills on the thirtieth, ride out the rest of the month making out a list of the stupid stuff I forgot to get...
Important stuff that I can't do without I get on my rockhopper and ride after. So far, it has never rained on my toilet paper!!!
