I have an 84 F150 with the 300 I6 in it and just about everything under the hood is stock and I am want to get as much out of the thing as possible. what would be the pros and cons of rebuilding or getting a new carb, and would it be worth it? also if you have any suggestions keep in mind im on a tight buget, the court will be reciving most of my money for a long long time (dang diversion program may be saving my *** but it's costing me an arm and a leg)
PS. my truck is going to be sitting for 90 days so time isn't really an issue for me.
You can usually find Offenhauser intakes on Ebay for cheap, throw an adaptor and a decent 2BBL on it, and you have a pretty good intake setup. On my old 300-6, I used the exhaust manifolds from an EFI 300-6, with 2" duals, and it gave good power across the board. I used the Offey intake, first with a Holley 350cfm 2BBL, but it was hard to keep tuned, so I put on a Motorcraft 351cfm 2BBL, and never had another problem with it.
The 2" exhaust may seem small, but I also tried a 3" single, and wished I had kept the duals. I lost most of the low-end power, and gained very little if any in the upper end. I drove that truck cross-country with a trailer, grossing nearly 12,000lbs, and it did pretty well. I usually shifted it in the 5,000rpm + range, and it pulled strong through 5500rpm.
Pros and cons of either rebuilding or purchasing a new carb? Well, if you are able to rebuild it (technically inclined), then rebuild it. As long as it is rebuildable? No reason to purchase a new stock carb if you can rebuild the old one. Save the money...
