where im at, everybody is into trucks. i was thinkin bout entering my truck in the pulls at the county fair. i have a 77 f250 hiboy, 4.10s, all time 4wd, 400 w/edelbrock performer intake, holley 4brrl, 1in carb spacer, divorced transfercase with factory stabilizer bar, and cut off exhausts. all steel
flatbed and DMI bumper gives me some good weight.
so, long story short, do u think its worth pullin?
Ive got a few tips or pointers but I want you to understand that if something goes wrong you could really tear some stuff up. I just dont want you to grenade your truck trying to prove that your stuff are bigger than theirs. I use to do it when I was young and I was lucky enough not to break anything but some good friends of mine broke all types of stuff. Ive seen axle housings break, drive shafts twist like they were paper towel rolls, transmissions and engines break and countless axle shafts and u joints. Just be careful.
First thing is that if your tires are pretty skinny I would air them down to around 10-12psi in the back not the front. Make the tire just barely start to bulge on the bottom. You might have to adjust air pressure but 10-12psi should be about right.
Always keep your transfer case in 4 lo. Like I said gear ratio makes the difference. I have always liked autos but if you have a 4spd dont take it out. With a C6 keep it in 1st with NP435 4spd probably 2nd. 1st is so god awful low you wont be able to spin the tires quick enough.
When you hook your strap...strap NOT CHAIN....hook it to your hitch. Dont hook it to the axle or just 1 frame rail. Heres a trick. Buy you a 4" or 6" drop receiver hitch and instead of letting it drop turn it upside down so it raises then hook your shackle to that. The reason you want to be higher is the stress of pulling will make the higher truck squat and the lower truck raise up. The squatting truck will have more weight on the tires and more traction the lower truck that is being raised up will have the weight taken off the rear causing less traction. Make sense?
When you line up make sure you are pointed straight. Hook your strap up and pull up until its tight. Never ****** off the line. Keep your foot on the brake. Hold it tight as hell. When the dumby you are hooked too starts spinning his tires take off. When his tires are spinning and hot they dont have as much traction. You can pull them all over the world.
flat bed makes a big difference. Im sure any decent flat bed will weigh more than a stock bed. More weight is always a plus. The heavy bumper up front is a plus too. Ive seen rather weak ( or lets just say not super high horsepower) trucks pick the front tires off the ground when locked up to another truck Some people only hook up on dirt or mud because you rarely ever break anything but you never know who will win. Sometimes it just depends on who is on the right side of the mud puddle. Pavement is always equal but you have the risk of breakage.
Never air down the tires (usually got to drive home), but I always use my brakes. Everyone I pull seems to think it's cheating... not my fault they didn't do it.
I don't like the idea of doing it on black top (to easy to break), but if the trucks are slightly similar they usually don't do much in the mud.
The NP203 is stronger than people give it credit for, and it'd probably last quite a while, but either way, I hate the thing... had one myself and good reason to hate it.
