Does the bios recognize the drive? Maybe try setting the bios to defaults, save and exit. That should make the bios update components.
If the bios does not recognize the drive, it's either a bad drive or a bad IDE. Since you said you already tried a different cable and drive, it points to bad IDE. At that point I suppose you could try to update the bios.
What does the device manager say about the drive in question ?

I'ver put the drive on the other ide and on a controller card,
the bois recognises it and windows recognises it, I have a few other drives laying around here, I'm gonna try those
For some reason my computer doesn't like it when a burner is by itself on a cable, it has to be on a cable with another drive. Two different burners and same story. make sure the jumper is set in the right position.
