here's the shiz.... Ive got xp pro and a LITEON 24 X cd burner. sometime in the last couple of weeks something happened and it will no longer burn. In NERO i get "logical unit not ready, operation in progress" after it attemps to burn.
I've also tried burning with cdrwin with siommiliar results.
I switch cd brands, same results
I swap out burners Same results
I swap IDE cables Same results
I put it on another IDE connector Same results
I update the aspi drivers Same results
I try burning audio, data, vcd same results
Sounds like it time to blast Windows and do a clean install. I try to do this every 6 months or at least once a year. Yes, it's a pain in the butt, but it gets rid of all the garbage that mixes things up. Think of it as house cleaning.
Norton is problem number one. While many many people consider it to be the best it's really one of the worst. We've come a long way from the monkey-b epidemic, norton was the only anti-virus program that COULDN'T clean the infection. I used f-prot at that time, and now I use AVG free edition. MY cousin had norton, and I installed AVG and ran it.. Guess what, his supposedly up to date norton didn't find something the in the neighborhoor of 8 viruses that AVG did. Norton also takes over your computer, worse that AOL IMO..... Go get AVG (www.grisoft.com) and run it. Then see what happens. It may be something as simple as a virus, or something as complex as a driver or registry problem.
I'll get rid of norton, I also found that site yesterday, I still think its the aspi drivers, But i'm really think its time for a format. I havent formatted in 2-3 years, before that i did it every couple months,
I'll have to put this project on hold till after my wedding on the 10th
By writing this, I am 'dooming myself' to a re-format and re-installl of XP.
(My luck. . . .)
I have been quite lucky with this machine, that I built/am using.
First of all, how much memory is in the machine? (Curiosity more than anything.)
Have you installed any new programs lately?? (Since the last time you've burned a CD.)
How many processes/programs do you have running while burning a CD? (This goes back to the memory question.)
I would suggest:
Un-install Norton. Trash it. (Sorry. I'm not a Norton fan. Not at all. It 'takes on a life of it's own'!) Norton CDs make good Frisbees, though!
Un-install Nero. (Have the CD to re-install handy.)
Download/install and run SpyBot.
Download/install and run Ad-Aware. Pay close attention to any 'messages' that you get.
Download/install AVG Anti-virus (Free version is verrrrry good.) Pay close attention to any 'messages' that you get.
Shut down PC after the above.
"Cold Boot" pc after 3-5 minutes.
Install Nero.
Re-boot pc
Try to 'burn' a CD.
Another thought . . . . the CD burner may have gone 'south'. My Yamaha 24x burner did this, about 4 months after install.
I've seen Lite-On burners go bad, too. (Knock wood. My 52x32x52x is fantastic.) A friend bought a Lite-On that was DOA.
Let us know how you make out. . . . . . .
Keith
EDIT: Congrats on the wedding!!!

NOrtons gone, Nero was reinstalled,
AVG was installed and found nothing,
ADaware and spybot were updated and ran.
I swapped out burners with the same results ( 2 of the same liteons one older plextor)
Ive got a dual 933 p3 with 1 gig of ram
I couldnt find any firmware updates for the lite ons.
I even did a system restore back 6 weeks.
I think BFR250SD might have something, re: the re-format - re-install XP.
Something's amiss.
Are you running the burner off of IDE 1 or 2, or from a 'promise' card?
Are the jumpers (on the burner) configured properly? Master / Slave / Cable Select?
I might have missed it. . . did you install anything different just before the problems started?
Also, it could be something as simple as hardware failure (like your ribbon cable). If nothing else has changed and the problem started, maybe a new 8 dollar ribbon cable is the next possible solution.
