Have recently traded my 29ft bumper pull for 33 ft fithwheel and am right at the max weight but wanted info on actual performance from people with actual results from chipping a 97 F250 7.5L 460. Was it worth the investment and what was the overall results.
Just out of curiosity how is your truck doing with this load, and how much does it weigh, i have an 87 460, and i havent had a chance to push it yet, so i have yet to know the true performance.

Stock all the way around. Stock engine with 86,000 miles and it seems to handle it just fine. Much better than it did with the bumper pull. Better weight distribution I guess. Am going to the mountains over Labor day and will see what it really does. I don't anticipate any problems.
I guess you don't mind watching your gas gauge dropping faster than a jet falling out of the sky
The 460s are good they do have one drawback is you will only get 6mpg so trying to crank more power out of it will just drop that figure to 4mpg. When you are climbing the hills you just take it slow no point in putting your foot into it as all that does is cost you 5-10 dollars in gas
You big concern should be braking power your pulling a real heavy trailer with a 3/4 ton truck. Make sure the trailers brakes all work and your trucks brakes are in good shape and you go down the hills in low gear or you maybe pulling half the seat out of you azz.
Dont say they get that bad, my 87' 460, 4x4, c6, 4.10 gears got 9.5 mpg towing up hills with 6k lb trailer and about 1200 lb's of stuff with 38 gallons of gas, that figure includes stump pulling in 4L and towing it up a few miles on a mountain road in 4L, i'd have to say that while a 460 is in good tune you can get some pretty good mileage out of one.
I've recently got a 6.8L V10 but not ready to put 5th wheel in it yet. I use it for work. Wish the 97 460 had the HP it has. 110 HP more would really make a big difference. Oh well have to dance with the one that brung ya!
Too bad its a newer "Advanced" design, or i'd know exactly how you could be pushin near 400 HP on regular pump gas with a 460. I sure do love havin that carburator on the top of my engine instead of FI.
I had a '95 F-250 460 E4OD 4.10 axle with a full Banks exhaust pulling a 13k 5th wheel. No chip. Cat removed. Unhitched the thing would go like a raped ape. With the trailer attached it was a struggle for the truck. Every hill it would labor even if I shifted down at the earliest opportunity. Any mountain pass had to be pulled in 1st gear. Made for a very long trip. And yes I only got 6mpg. I never went over 65mph. Stopping was even worse. I took one trip with the trailer and realized that it was underrated for the task and bought a bigger truck.
