My AOD is showing its age (152,000 miles without a rebuild and still counting)and I'm planing on swaping it out for a ZF. I know that the easiest and cheapest way to do the swap is to get every thing from a doner truck but, I haven't been able to find a F 250/350 doner trucks in my area. Although I have found a few 5 speed F 150s, I know they have the mazda tranny but they have almost every thing else I need. The only thing I'm not sure about is if the cutch master and slave cylinders from the mazda will will work with the ZF, does anyone know if they will.
Use an earlier ZF, with an external slave cylinder. The later internal ones gave a lot of problems. The pedal assembly should be the same between the Mazda and ZF trannies, I would use a new MC anyways.
No, the early ZFs had an external. I almost put one in my 84 F-250, but went with a c6 for cost reasons. I was replacing a blown 435, so it wasn't like I was loosing overdrive.
For the 87 model year, all slave cylinders shown are external. If there is a junkyard nearby, go there and stick your head under a few trucks. When you find the correct setup, write down the info from that truck, and use it to order new parts.
