axles and gears axles and gears

looking for input. I'm installing a 460 and zf5 tranny in my 90 bronco. I have the doner 88 f250 with 410 gears but I'm trying to decide weather to keep my existing axles with the 355s use the 250s or get something different. will my 8.8s handle that 460? Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated.

It will handle the 460, what it won't handle very well is tires bigger than 35". If you use 4.10 gearing in the rear you'll have to regear the front too, gearing front and rear should always be matched, if you like your transfer case in one piece.

Thanks Encho. I've got a 4" skyjacker lift and I have 33s under it I'm wanting to find out what suggestions anyone has on the axles and gears what will give me the all around package from hwy mileage and rpms to romping in the woods and rescuing those stuck chevys plus I am a remodeler and I'll use it when I have say a trailer load of deck material to get to the job. I'm trying to decide so I can either install these 1 ton 410s or sell them to recoup some money. After I sell off everything I dont need I'll have the 460,z75,computer,harness,all bolt on motor accessories, doors and more for 0 dollars the way I like it.

4.10's would be a good match for the 33" tires.

I would do that myself...

4.11's up to about 33's is good. Keep in mind that the Dana 44 front and 8.8 rear have ever-so-slight differences in ratios. D44 stock is 3.54 while the 8.8 is 3.55. D44 takes 4.10 while the 8.8 will actually be 4.11. Just the nature of the beast. This is one of the reasons NOT to run a part-time t-case on dry pavement with these axles. The minor discrepancy will eventually stretch chains and chew up tires

if your going to tow and such i would swap the rear axle from the F250 into the bronco. get the front TTB setup with 4.10's and do an 8 lug swap so you can run the same wheels all around.

the 8.8 will not hold up well to the 460 and towing in my opinion.

The 8.8 and D44 TTB will not like all that torque if you beat on it too much IMHO. I would make sure that your Frame is in 100% perfect condition too.

Like the Zebra paint! I was wanting to do that but since I want mine to blend with the woods I'm going camo. I bought my daughter an 89 4runner that were doing the Zebra on. My frame is great. I'm just trying to save putting those big one tons on and having to go through all that work if my stock axles will work without them breaking.

You could always swap the motor and keep the axles in case your truck breaks. The paint is a great conversation starter, however you won't blend in anywhere lol

If I was going to switch I was going to put both front and rear axles out of that 250 on my bronco the 250 is 4x4. but I'm really not wanting to do that if I don't have to I'm already doing a buttload with the drive train plus I already have my suspension lift installed.I just don't want to go busting anything on my stock setup with the torque I'll have. I'm also looking for the gear that will be good on gas on the hwy and good when I pull off the hwy into the woods.

I've been told that before and It's a thought but I'm hoping to find people who have done this before and get all the input I can so I can do this all at once plus while the drive trains are out that's the time to do any axles, less weight and all that working room and I wont even have to lay down..LOL

I just found a link that might help anyone going through what I am about mathcing tires with gears, auto vs manuel and overdrive or not.

Differential Gear Ratio Chart - Tire Size to Gear Ratio

Now I still need to know if my stock axle ring and pinion will handle the torque of a stock 460. also will I snap wheel studs? the 250 hub has eight compared to my five.

the f250 front end really isnt an upgrade over the bronco front end thats why i said just swap the outers to 8 lug and swap the sterling rear diff under the bronco. you will only have to pay for 1 diff to be setup with correct gears. the TTB D44 will hold up to the 460 just fine.

I am more worried about you towing heavy loads with a short wheelbase rig like the bronco. I towed just a regular 18' travel trailer and it had its spook moments.

OK let me see if I have this. Swap the entire rear end. and on the front just put on 8 lug outer(the part that holds the rim correct?) but can I swap my diff(gear case)with the 250s? Mostly I wont be hauling heavy loads I'm just wanting to build an all purpose toy with lots of ***** and maybe hook a chain to my rear and some of my buddies cheys rears and see who can pull who.lol. I know I'm going overkill with a 460 but at least now I can donate my broncos 302 into my daughter's and mine 89 yota 4runner. I'm like Tim Taylor on home improvement, more power!! Thanks for your time and advise I think I'm almost there.

P.S I've also learned why the fords with borge Warner transfer cases go 409 front and 410 rear or 354 front 355 rear it's because the borg is not a 1 to 1 ratio but a 1:1.1
