Sierra is right though, he started somewhere else (PA).
By the way, this morning I was bored so I started to watch some movies. I watched Under Siege, just to see the USS Missouri. Watching that movie is like watching Top Gun, you watch it to check out the F-14

Now that brought back some good memories; along with #80 on offense and #42 on defense.
Him in 16 is a little runt, the wife Jen is the boss and taller. Met the whole family at Nick Athens Chiropractic were I was getting treatments from a back injury, Nick worked on the 49'ers (Joe, Rice, others). My wife is taller than Jen and reached over her to have Joe sign a superbowl ticket stub, boy was she pissed. Rice would show up in a 944 Porsche. "Time for Bier, ya,ya!
.....=o&o>.....
This is an awesome picture showing the firepower of those 16" guns. You can see how it pushes the ship and moves the water around. In the bottom right you can see the guys on the USS Ranger (CV-6) gathering around to watch the New Jersey (BB-62) unleash her wrath.
I think my favorite ships I've been on have been the USS John F. Kennedy CV-67 and the USS Hampton SSN-767.
I spent four years on the Kennedy and most recently saw her in Boston on her "farewell" trip. She will most likely be decomissioned soon. It is sad to see her go, kinda like junking a favorite truck just one hell of a lot bigger.
There has been talk of bringing the JFK to Boston as a museum ship. The problem with trying to make a venture like that realistic is the immense amount of maintenance that a ship that size requires. The Iowa wouldn't be much different as it is close to 70,000 tons if I remember right. The Kennedy is 85k I think. The other problems with it is that a ship that size takes up a huge amount of pier space and unless it is located in a convenient, military friendly city with a lot of tourists, it won't draw a crowd. Several people have said here that they "should go see it someday" referring to other museum ships but most never will.
We have the ex-USS Cassin Young here in Boston and it draws a good crowd due to it's location with the USS Constitution and the number of tin-can sailors out there. I volunteered on it for several years and even at 2000+/- tons, it was a ton of work for a small crew. Not far away in Quincy we have the USS Salem ( http://www.uss-salem.org/ ) and last I heard it was bankrupt and looking for a new berth.
I think the Iowa deserves a better retirement than S.F. anyway - they'd probably paint it pink and have some sort of "pride" thing on it and bash the military and al the folks that served on her.....now I have one more excellent reason NOT to go to S.F.
The USS North Carolina is berthed permanently in Wilmington, N.C. It's been there since 1966, and they keep opening up more and more of it to the public. Last year we could go through the targeting areas and the magazines. It's a sister ship to the Iowa and Big Mo.
The engine room looks better than the US Navy ships I was stationed on in the '70's and '80's.
Sorry, but the IOWA class only had 4 ships.....Iowa, Missouri, New Jersey and Wisconsin......The Kentucky was under construction, but was never finished (although the forward part of her hull was attached to the Wisconsin after a collision in dense fog off the coast of Norfolk a long time ago)

Well, okay......they all look the same through a periscope - like TARGETS.
When will the Iowa be open for the public? I live in the S.F. bay area and it's only 45 miles east of me to Stockton. After going to Hawaii and walking on "Moe" (wow what a ship) I want to get aboard the Iowa. Shame she's inland and not in Alameda next to the Hornet (my home town) or at San Fransico were the tourists can come aboard and support a super ship. What a piece of machinery for it's day.

Thank you! I was wondering what movie to watch, and I have that one. I think I will...
It brings back old memories - it was one of the first DVD's i bought when I finally had a computer capable of it (ATI card).
It was a pivotal point in learning about TV versus MONITOR resolution...
I retract that, I can't find it.
Dammit I hate to say it but it is true:
I hate my stepsons! They went through everything I left behind while I was away, and helped themselves to it. A curse on them - may their own do the same to them!
I will watch "Tears of the Sun" instead...
