I recently purchased an Innova 3100 ODB II code reader with the intention of reading the codes on my '96 F250 PSD. However, when I tell the reader to link and download codes the "wait to start" fires again and I get an error on the reader.
Can anyone confirm for me that the '96 is actually ODB II complient? If it is does anyone have an idea what is causing the error?
I have a superchips micro tuner and it starts with the key in the off position . I have no experince with your equipment either but no insult intended but double check your directions.

Welcome to the FTE dwrivers.
Despite having an OBDII port, the 94-97's are not OBDII compliant. The inexpensive code readers almost never work on our diesels. That being said...something is not right with the way yours is acting. I'd guess either your connection is faulty at the interface, the scantool is defective, or maybe you aren't using it right?

Probably nothing wrong with you scanner. To read the diesel you need a scanner the will read enhanced ford codes. I have an Actron CP9135 and AutoXray 2000 and it will not work on my 2000. When I asked a mechanic that I trust at the Ford dealership, that was his explanation why.
Thanks for the input. I have double (and triple) checked the directions and it says to run the scan with the key in "on" position. I've also tried running with it off and at acc, all without sucess.
I'm guessing that Cookie is right and my 96 is not ODB II. 96pwrstrk can you tell me exactly what scanner you use for your rig? I've had some odd and annoying stuff going on that I really need some help debugging (overdrive blink - tranny problem?; stalling at decel, stalling on low speed turns - CPS?; etc..).
I have the old two stage 1705 superchips MAX micro tuner. But I haven't needed to check any DTC's for any problems knock on wood. When Ifirst got the turner I checked for codes and their was 1 but it was of no importance I cleared them and haven't seen any since. So as far as reading the codes I am not sure if it does . Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Depending on how much you are wanting to spend and if to want a Palm Pioot based one, or a computer based one or a stand alone. AutoXray makes a good stand alone, AutoEngenuity makes a Palm Pilot and laptop. Auterra makes a Palm Pilot one. Most of these will run you from about $200-$500, but makes sure you get one with the Enhanced Ford Codes. In 1996 and beyond, Ford had to comply with OBD II requirements. These requirements had to apply to both gas and diesel engines. This is out of my Jendham ODB II training manual and diagnostic manual. Hopes this helps
