If I remember, the only access to Sitka and Wrangell is either by ferry or small plane. How cool is that?
Alaska flys their 737's into both of them.... and I'll tell you what, I have had my license for years, and there is something to be said of them pilots whippin a Boeing around like I do a Cessna..... Sitkas runway is built on a jetty, the wings are MUCH wider than the runway!!! definately a pucker experiance if your not aware of it!!
I was sent there a number of times for my job. The roads are horrible. The whole eastern seaboard has those crazy 'turnabout things' and the drivers on the Interstate are the most ruthless I've seen anywhere. They make the Chicago expressways seem like boyscout trails.
If money was no object I'd move to Hawaii. Heck, I could even be a bum there. Just give me a tent and a motorcycle... just dreaming of course.
I'm not of the southern persuasion but a guy I used to work with moved down to northern Bama after he retired. He built a 3000 sqft house on seven acres of land and pays about $500 / yr in real estate tax. And his electric is dirt cheap -- TVA.
I would move to the northern Olympic Peninsula, maybe around Port Townsend (this isn't my home state, I just got here two years ago), or northern Idaho. Something with snow, scenic views, and woods.
Foothills of New Mexico - stay out of Maryland - terrible traffic and way too many taxes!
You betcha!
Maryland's motto: If you can wear it; eat it; drink it; smoke it; drive it; live in it; use it; or put a house on it, we can and will tax it!
Wow, believe or not, I've been thinking of posting this same question (looking for 'suggestions') as I'm looking to move in 2-3 years max. Lived in MA my whole life, and basically had enough (OK, had enough 20 years ago). Gotta be warmer longer, a rural area, and (most importantly) be liberty friendly (the more the better) if you know what I mean. Right now the top of the list would be the Carolinas, Utah, Nevada, maybe Georgia; I'll likely be planning trips to get a better feel for these, and scope out areas and prices. Other options like Montana are just too cold for our liking. [The wife pines for CA where she was born, but, honestly, I'd be looking at different countries if that was the choice.] Would prefer something within a reasonable drive to the ocean. [1956MarkIII, got a nice vacation home with great views on the Cape - maybe you'd be interested?] Ideally we could find a 'like exchange' of primary residences and avoid all the taxes (I know several who have been able to find a 'match' when bailing out). The only good thing about the absurd home prices here is the $$ left over after the move (or a big step up if you prefer). Just countin' the days. . .
Thats where I live. I love it, and wouldnt move for much of anything.
But in response to this thread, I would have to choose a state that promotes gun use, gun ownership, and concealed carry. It must also be supportive of hunting, 4x4 trail systems (national forest roads also), definately ATV supportive, and must be a Republican state.
